I do alot of movie making with my friends, so I am looking into getting an external hard drive in which to store these movies on.  I want the thing to be able to write fast, and store alot, for a good price.  Anyone who has experience in this please provide.

Thanks, Dark.

I usually buy the hard drive enclosure and  the drive itself seperately.  Not only do I find this to be cheaper, but better in long run.  I have one case here that I really like and I have used a 60, 75, 100, 120gb drive with.  If i want to upgrade the size of the drive, then i only need to buy a new HD.  It just works for my needs.

I just bought a Formac Oxygen FW HD with 250Gbyte.

The first thing I did was removing the fan, which is really annoying and following the hd temperatur it wasn't necessary at all - it's much cooler than my PB harddisk, however beside that the reason why I bought this HD is that you can add a second harddisk later to the same enclosure.

So far I'm satisfied, however I think there are more beautiful enclosures(the Formac is just some crappy white plastic) and if you need only one disk don't take it, there are cheaper ones out there.

Bye,

Mauti

This is like the one I recently purchased.  400GB external Firewire and USB 2.0 with pretty blue LED lights at the bottom that look really cool and an aluminum enclosure that matches my G5 and new Apple 20-in Cinema Display.

buffalo makes some sexy externals that can be networked or direct linked.  Or, if you really do a lot of editing, find a small 2 or 3 HD NAS unit.  It will run you about $600 - $800, but you also get a small Raid system for backup and it's relatively quick.

I like the LaCie Hardrives - especially the triple interface ones so you can use whatever connection depending on how old your computer is.

LaCIE Bigger Disk extreme allows to to record directly onto that hard drive without the loss of frames that you would normally suffer. Any LaCIE D2 drive does that same.

I use a ProMax, 250gig, (7200RPM necessary for video) for my FCP and Avid Express Pro media.  Works great, never any problems.

Have the 160GB version of it. It's good and fast, but gets a little hot. Doesn't affect the data or its reliability, though. If you don't want to spend more then this is the external HD you want.

I've got more bloody HD's than i know where to start.

External? For Video editing etc? well if you can go with a Firewire 800 RAID set up, Im pretty drunk right now so i can't remember the name of the guys i got my enclosure from, but it has two 250GB drives i can't remember the names of inside.

And Lacie, they are drunk as well. good drives and you can rack them up - excellent for storing video, in terms of fast read write - Firewire 800 is going to make a lot more pints than firewire 400.
