Hey Grifter, My thougths and prayers are with you and Your Family.  You have to pull through this buddy, if not for everyone on GR, then definetly for your family and little Grifter Jr. that will make his/her way into this world.  He/She will need their daddy to play with, to teach them rs, etc.

Snake, a spleen is not your backbone. It is an ignored organ that is on the left side of your diaphragm...not the backbone. People have splenectomies (sp?) all the time and they can lead a normal life afterwards. A splenectomy (sp?) is the procedure in which they remove the spleen.

Snake, fortunately you're thinking of the spine, not the spleen. Big difference. I'll clarify this to everyone. Assassin explained it pretty well, but i'll elaborate a bit more.

The spleen is an organ located in the upper left part of the abdominal cavity. It functions as a part of the immune system. The spleen is used for:
?filtering out foreign organisms that infect the blood
?removing old or damaged platelets and red blood cells
?storing extra blood and releasing it as needed
?forming some types of white blood cells

BTW the proper spelling is s-p-l-n-e-c-t-o-m-y, and 1% of the population is spleenless. It is not a vital organ, though at first grift's resistance to infection will be lowered. The good news is that eventully organs such as the liver can take over the responsibilities of the spleen. So, while some of you thought that removing his spleen would paralyze him, luckily you are incorrect.
