Today, September 24, 2004, marks the 75th Anniversary of the first totally blind, all-instrument flight by the pilot of an airplane.  On September 24, 1929, Lt James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle took off, circled the airfield, and landed without ever seeing the ground.  It was his experiments in blind flying, and his help in developing instruments like the artificial horizon, turn-and-slip indicator, altitude indicator, and others that allow us to fly today with the amount of safety we do in the night and in adverse weather.
