New G5's? GF4's?
«
on:
January 04, 2002, 05:33:21 am »
So. As the discussion on all the other Mac forums is directed to MWSF, I think that the *DAMN Forums should have some thing about it also. What do we think we will see? I think that Apple will not be realeasing much. The GeForce4 will possibely be released @ Tokyo, but not likely to be released @ MWSF (Yes, I know that GF's are not G5's, but the GF3 was realeased @ MWT ). So, whats the deal with the G5's for MWSF? Will they be there?

No, I don't think the GF4 will be released there, they may be announced that they will be in the G5s, but not released.
Well, if they aren't releasing G5s, Apple is sure making people think they will.
"Big by even our standards."
Big? G5s are big, faster G4s are not.
"To boldy go where no PC has gone before."
Perhaps this is indicating higher ghz than any current PC on the market?

First and foremost, at MWSF 2002, Apple in conjuction with Scott Kevill with release a new piece of hardware called the iNewbie. It will allow all of us to send shocks of electricity to all of the unruly idiots on or banned from GR via Apple Pro Keyboards. Finally, we will be able to cause Romulus real physical pain. Muwahaha.
The G5 probably won?t be ?released,? instead, methinks at the most a preview of in six months when they are finally available, mac loylalists will finally be able to enjoy 2 Ghz of processor melting speed.
GeForce 4? Um. No. How about a reasonably priced GeForce 3 first.
Upped processor speeds are a given, as are software upgrades. A more formal announcement of FCP3 will probably happen and I wouldn?t be surprised at a DVD Studio Pro 2.0 release either.
Flat screen imacs? Gawd, I hope not.
There?s also been some stuff about PS2 and Xbox being incorporated into the mac, but how or when is pretty much up for grabs.
Price drops on the LCD monitors is a given. Or at least I hope.
And last but not least, a new keyboard that prohibits the spelling of ?words? like 1337 and r0x0rz.
that's at least what i think will happen.

Humm...
Wrath - From what I heard on the Mac News Network, it sounds like there might be a new iMac released, and also some sort of faster G4. Not the G5 as of yet, tho.
Blackhand - HAHA! I don't use a Apple Pro Keyboard! HAH! The GeForce3 Ti 500
is
priced well, at just over $300 (Last I checked... might be $350). If you are a fool and buy the GeForce's with your Mac, you are a fool. A new iMac design is not needed. The current is fine, but more speed is needed. The LDCs look nice, but I wish that Apple would recontinue the old displays...
Final request - A keyboard with the 1337 function of a POWER BUTTON on it! that would r0x0r!

hmm....I have two predictions, based on absolutely nothing whatsoever.
- the titanium powerbooks will get a decent keyboard
- apple will skip G5 altogether and go to 6 like netscape

MW eh?
If I were to guess, I'm going to say:
New iMacs with the flat screens. The suppliers have already been working on them according to many news sites. I think this is the safe pick.
G5's will be there, and just like the G4's you wont be able to get the fastest one for a few months (which will end up being 6 months).
other rumors of note..... IBM has some G3's that are over 1Ghz now.... and predict that they can go to 2Ghz. IBM is really pushing G3 technology, which is the reason they gave for not developing the G4 "we feel the G3 has so much more room to grow that we haven't explored yet." I doubt that apple would move "back" to a "faster" G3, except this is still good news for iMac / iBook users. I haven't heard if the new iMacs are G3 or G4 yet.
So, what do I think.... I think you are going to see New iMacs, New G5 towers, and a preview of OS X 10.2. I would also predict that there will be talk of some new software partnerships for OS X, as this is a place where Apple has been taking a lot of shit about. The iBook and Powerbook may also have another bump, but I doubt it. Bumping all 4 of it's lines would just match up to the hype.
As for the "go where no PC has gone before".... I have read rumors that the Apollo or G5 has crossed the 2Ghz mark. They have been producing the G5's at 1.6 in mass (according to rumors for the past 4 months). Maybe they have pushed it further and have actually kept a lid on it so far (Jobs is big on keeping secrets, even if he hasn't been the best at it).

About putting PS2 or XBOX game playing ability into the mac, that makes no fucking sense. I'd understand the Gamecube as that is actually based on PowerPC where the XBOX is based on more of a PC archetecture and the PS2 is based on being as technically fucked as is possible. BTW, my dad's company which makes memory components is talking about a deal to make stuff for the PS3 hardware so they are studying up on the GCN's set-up to see how non-morons would set up a console system.

Well I guess I should weigh in with my predictions. I'll be a little bold with my first two.
- First, a near total revamping of the iMac. Flat screen, G4 as an option, faster bus. and a total new look (I think it's time for that weird rounded shape to fade into retirement)
- Second, the most bitching new line of towers. G5's available in a 1.6-1.8ghz dual or a 2ghz single processor.
- The iBooks possibly could get some small upgrades, but the TiBook will be left alone. And loudnotes, the keyboard on the TiBook is pretty damn nice for a laptop in my opinion. No real big news for the other hardware peripherals (iPod, Airport, etc.) except possibly hyping the new Airport more.
- As for software, I'm expecting/hoping/praying that a lot of the beta software has a legit release finally. Companies like Adobe, Symantec, and many others need to quit annoying me with having to click the box saying:
"I acknowledge this is a beta release for OS X which means it will be filled with bugs, crash randomly possibly, and overall make you appreciate the few companies who have concentrated on good OS X software so far."
as I download the X beta hesitantly. And although this is probably the biggest longshot of the bunch, I WANT GR X. I rarely am on GR anymore (not a coincidence because I have to run it in classic) so I don't know the rumors that have been flying around, but I am tired of waiting for something we were originally supposed to get at the end of last August. This could coincide well with the release of more X compatible games worth playing, eg RTCW.
Am I being extremely optimistic? Yes. Do I have much grounds for my predictions? As always, a resounding no. But then again, I'm just an Ass being, well, an Ass.

Grifter - Welcome back, and happy new year! I thought that what you said sounded damn right-on. I have been hearing @ other news sites that the new G3 procs are over 1GHz (1-1.2GHz). I really hope that the G5 (Or what ever they call it) is faster then Intels new shit (Rainwood [I forget spelling, and parents threw out paper!] 2.2GHz, 13 pipeline [The G4's pipeline is 7] )...Ah well. I surely hope they will come out with a decent priced Mac G5 before Febuary... [I get my PC in Febuary].

The G5 does move to 13 rather then 7 Rom (at least according to every article I've read).
Ace, I agree that the iMac will probably look much different as well. I expcect something really off the wall, not like some of the Sony flatscreen PC's.
Also, I forgot about the new Airport (802.11a? I think). There is that, USB 2 and Firewire 2 that will also probably filter in there somewhere as well.
As for the iBook and TI Powerbook.... if they update one I would guess they'd update them both... only because they did it the same day last time. Both are up to speed and I believe I read that the iBook has been the best selling laptop on the market for a few months in a row. So I would not expect anything too big if at all out of these (especially since the TI got the internal combo drive already). All I'd expect is a little speed boost if the towers are all that they are cracked up to be. After all, you aren't going to go buy a 600mhz laptop if you can get a 2ghz tower for near the same price.... well, I would, but not most people. So if the towers double their speed, I'll bet that the laptops get a bump, if not at MWSF, then by Feb.
And I still agree, Software should (and better) take a big front row seat right next to the speed increases.

I think that there will be a new proc in the iMac's (1GHz+) and also be a new design.
Grifter - If I am not mistaken, Apple has regestered some thing called 'Giagwire' which is a fast firewire. USB 2 is out on PCs and I think will be out soon on Macs.

the rumor is "gigawire" is firewire 2, it hasn't been announced yet.... the copyright was for the name, no details yet. That's why I'm guessing it may be one of the announcements.

My dad (who is in the computer industry) was saying something about Apple possibly switching to using pentium 4 and other common PC components. I'm not that technically inclined to properly interpret these things but it sounded like Apple could compete with Microsoft on other systems or something? Anyway, if this sounds impossible I may be saying it wrong, either way it is improbable.

Humm... I am not that impressed. Its nothing I didnt think would happen, and it really isnt all that great. I was hoping for a new proc with higher speeds... Does Apple normally realease all the computers at the begining of the MW, or just the shitty ones? I think teh design is kewl, but thats about where it ends... No new proc, no faster ram (DDR 2100). Good price tho.
