Cutter brought up this question in the Columbine thread and I thought it was interesting. It is a thought that I'm sure crosses everyone's mind at some point. I know many of you own guns or at least know how to use them, so this should produce some interesting results. What would you do?

if i catch someone on my lawn i shoot to wound (kids fetching balls, the mailman, door to door salesmen), if your in my house i aim for the head. I usually don't shoot people in public anymore, because i'm in college and it gets expensive to replace guns after i clean them and throw them in the harbor.

well actually that part isn't true,
but if my life was threatened i'd shoot to kill, or beat someone to death with the butt of the gun.

To me, it all really depends on the circumstances.

In my case, I'd have to assume the burglar was armed and dangerous, because he'd have killed three large dogs to be there still.  So, assuming he wasn't lying in a bloody heap from the dogs, yeah, I'd probably figure he was too dangerous and pop him (not to mention being pissed as hell about the dogs).

Then again, with our dogs, I only expect to find a blood trail.  =D  We don't even lock our doors when we aren't home.

Of course it depends on the situation, but down here home invasions happen all the time. I'd like to say that I'd take out his kneecaps and talk to him about it for a while before i called the cops. but if it ever does happen it'll probably happen in the wee hours, i honestly dont have the best aim, i have big clips, and a nasty temper so it'll probably be a kill.
This reminds me bout a retired fireman that lived up the street when i lived in naples...late one night two guys were tryin to steal the outboard motor off his boat (trailered in the driveway), the fireman woke up and blew the one guy away with a shotgun, the other guy got shot and the cops caught him later. mb the victim being a retired fireman had something to do with it, but the D.A. charged (sucessfully btw) the surviving burglar with the murder of his buddy.

.....and justice for all...

Yeah, I was going to make the prompt more specific when I saw the first few responses and realized that the respondents were making different assumptions about the nature of the perpetrator. Then I realized that it also adds another interesting dimension to the question for it to be somewhat vague, which is the assumptions people make about criminals or people that attack their home. I now realize that this is the best possible question, because if I specified whether or not the attacker was armed or dangerous it would bias the results too much to make it uninteresting. After all, you don't really know anything in the heat of the moment besides your present sense impressions, which due to the stress and timing of such a situation probably wouldn't be very good or accurate anyway, causing one to assume. So there's the thought process behind the question.

I said that I wouldn't shoot the person under any circumstances. This is however under a different assumption than most of you made, which is the assumption that I would be able to flee the scene unmolested by the attacker. If he was armed, had me cornered, and intended to harm me, I would shoot him (although not intending to kill, merely intending to wound so that I could escape and call the 5-0).

If there is something in his hands that looks anywhere near threatening, I am going to put him down.

Edit: Point being that you haven't the foggiest idea how far he may take it, whether or not he is just going to steal, or whether or not he may do harm to your loved ones. In the eyes of the law, you are allowed to shoot at him if he is in your house, and I would be willing to do it to be on the safe side...rather be safe than sorry.

Nice Thread Tasty Cakes Wink

I would shoot to kill if i thought i was indanger, just like brian.  Though I do believe I could kill anyone, I have thought this..lets say I was an assassin...killing evil men or women that hurt others would suit me fine, yet i dont know if i could kill an innocent person. Reminds me of the movie "The Replacment Killers"

Better bring more then 3.  The biggest dog can finish a 16oz steak before you'd even leave the first room looking for the X-server.

Tasty, one more point.  In reality, if I came home to find an intruder, I couldn't shoot them, because they'd most likely be between me and my gun safe.

By the way this question was asked, I would shoot to wound because it didn't mention a weapon of any sort threatening your life. But if there was a weapon in the persons hand(s), they better have been praying lately....

My first reaction was to shoot to wound, because I don't want to be responsible for killing someone. However, I'd rather not shoot at all, because I've seen a man shot and I don't want to inflict that on anyone. Thinking it through in a leisurely fashion, a luxury I wouldn't have if the situation ever arose, I decided that I would shoot to kill. If he leaves the scene alive, there's a very good chance he'd be able to sue me on some grounds or other (not warning him I was armed or someshit), whereas if he's dead, there'd be none of that.

Tasty, if I lived in a shitty neighborhood, or carried a lot of cash, or found myself in shitty neighborhoods, then I probably would.  They are easy to get around here now.

If it's not a big guy or he is not armed, I would probably just beat the shit out of him, preferably with a baseball bat. For someone armed or big enough to put up a real fight, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot to wound.

Bucc - I know Jewb is skinny, but if I come in after the dogs have finished the steak and are busy eating him alive, do you think that would buy me enough time to jack the XServe and Cube?

i would never shoot anybody, because a) it's not that easy to get a gun in Austria, and b) 'cause i'm not allowed to get a gun licence until i'm 35 since i did my civil service instead of serving in the army, and c) 'cause  i've seen enough in my servica as paramedic to never ever hurt anyone physically.
