Oh, the Hum-anime!
«

I'm hoping that there are enough anime junkies hereabouts to make this thread entertaining.
This summer, my main time-eater has been watching anime. Lots and lots of anime. In the past month, I've watched Hellsing, Onegai Teacher, Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster, Big O, the second season of Initial D, and Last Exile, and I'm going to be finishing Mahoromatic tomorrow. I've also watched the movies Pom Poko, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Memories.
I'm collecting the episodes of Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou and Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto to watch after I've completed Onegai Teacher (just finished tonight) and Mahoromatic; and I'm in the preparatory stages of setting up to watch Lupin and Ruroni Kenshin (both require preparation because both are long series: 96 eps for Kenshin, plus a number of OVAs and a movie, and 228 eps for Lupin, plus a dozen or so movies).
I'd recommend Last Exile to anyone. That is one truly great series. Sci-fi steampunk with beautiful animation. I'd recommend most of the other series, too, but not to everyone.
I'm appeasing my inner anime whore this summer, and I figured what better way to continue the process than to create a thread here to talk about anime?

Coke, the best place to get fansubbed episodes and movies is Direct Connect. It takes some getting used to, but once you're up to speed on it, you can easily get a popular series in a night (lots of people hosting it) or an unpopular one in a few days. You can get it from
here
.
Coke, for somebody's first series, I generally recommend Cowboy Bebop. It doesn't require any knowledge of Japanese culture, and it also happens to be one of the best anime series ever made. It's 26 episodes long (one full season) plus a movie that comes after the series.
Yeah, anime episodes are about a half hour long. A typical Japanese show's episodes are 24-26 minutes long, and that includes anime.
Brain, suck it. : P Kenshin will be watched soon.

Manga is/are Japanese comic books. (Calling them "comic books" is really a misnomer, since that term has all sorts of associations in the Western, especially American, mind that don't apply to manga... but that's an entirely different discussion.) "Hentai" is the term for porno, more or less. Hentai translates into English as "perverted, sick, wrong, disgusting," etc. It's a very bad thing. You don't ever want to be called hentai. Regardless, in the English-speaking anime fandom, "hentai" generally means "porn". There's also hentai manga.

Yeah, GitS is badass, no doubt about it. It's also the first anime ever produced by a joint American-Japanese team.

No wonder it was badass... it had americans saying "MORE EXPLOSIONS! lOTS OF SHRAPNEL! BIGGER GUNS!"
Anyways.. I also have a reccomendation for a anime to avoid.. 'tis called "Royal Space Force." Basically, it's long, the animation sucks, andit's entirely depressing. Even when everything turns out good, it's still depressing. I don't know why.

I don't watch a lot of anime so all I can say is that the Miyazaki movies are awesome and the Cowboy Bebop one had a cool plot.

Hellsing was one of the series that I just recently watched. I liked it well enough, even though it was, as you said, clich?d. Nightwalker I haven't seen, although I think I've heard of it. ::adds it to his list of series to watch::
Onegai Teacher is a really, really well-done funny drama. It's humorous a lot of the time, but it's got a really well-written serious side. The character design and characterization is quite good, too.

GTO is already on my list. I've heard of X too, but forgot to add it. ::adds it::
Kami, I'm with you, Miyazaki is my god. Pom Poko is one of the Studio Ghibli films, so it's got that Miyazaki magic. It's only an average Ghibli movie, but that means it's excellent by any other scale.

I just finished watching Mahoromatic. It's a good series. Funny, but it can do the serious side without missing a beat. Cute girls who aren't too badly stereotyped. Ecchi (after all, pantsu-ness is life). And, surprisingly for an anime series, a satisfying ending.
On to Kareshi Kanojo No Jijou, A.K.A. His and Hers Circumstances. I'm on the fifth episode at the moment. It's directed by Anno Hideaki (who also directed Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Tsurumaki Kazuya (who also directed Neon Genesis Evangelion and Furi Kuri). The style is exactly what I expect from those two directors. Frenetic and manga-esque in the style of Furi Kuri, masterful camerawork and use of music, and excellent writing. It's good stuff. : ) Now, I return to it.
