I have read and seen alot on SOCOM, I was just curious as to how it plays against RS. Is it better, same, or worse? Also, if anyone is playing online, how are the games? Are there enough ppl to play against, and do you meet at a centralized server such as GR, or do you use IP?s to join games? So basically what Im sayin is: Is this worth buying for online play? Or will I get bored with it right away? And is there a story line for it, or is it just a shootem up game.

SOCOM is a tactical squadron based Third Person Shooter for the PS2.  Sadly it isn't the type of shooter that is made for a console but rather it is a PC style (meaning you have manual aiming).  This means it is inferior to a PC shooter no matter what.

The only FPS/TPS worth playing on consoles are those that are specially adapted to the console's strenghts and don't just use a PC formula despite the console's flaws.

One example of how a FPS can be adapted to a console is Metroid Prime, it uses a lock on system rather than aiming, thus it isn't hurt by the lack of mouse-look and can actually avoid being the bitch of a PC.

The marines are so good they took a jeep into some Iraq village trying to get ambushed, they refueled 6 times and did everything they could to get ambushed. and didn't!
Then the same people take in a army jeep and try not to get ambushed and they do. but the marines kill them all and go home.

Well, actually SOCOM functions as a single player game and does make use of the headset in single player in commanding the computer around.  It just happens that the online componet is why everyone is overrating the game...its as if they've never seen an online console game before.

Actually, this is the first online console game i've ever seen. I never really paid that much attention to things like that. Cool

Well, I thought what I said was a good enough message of don't buy it but apparently not.

So here we go...
Don't buy SOCOM, if you are going to bother owning a console then get console games like Mario Sunshine, Klonoa 2, Kingdom Hearts, etc.  Games in the Platformer, Adventure, RPG, Racing, and Puzzle genres.  Avoid FPS/TPS, RTS, and Fighting (which is an Arcade genre and doesn't really belong on consoles either).
