I'm in a bit of a twisted situation...

I can't wait for Ghost Recon, but on the other hand, I don't know if my computer can handle it. I have plenty of hd space, so i can do a full install (if that helps,) I have a shitload of RAM (576,) and the most recent operating system (Jaguar.) I have a cable modem (I usually get very good ping on most people's servers.)

Now here's the problem. I have a G3 iMac, 350 mhz. I've heard that 450 is the requirement. I have heard that iMac's cannot be upgraded in mhz or processor. What can I do? Will it be alright? Is there a way to overclock my iMac or speed it up in anyway enough for it to be able to handle GhR? Online or offline?

Please help me. You guys have helped me before, and I have confidence you can do it again.

And please...please don't go

I took the liberty of finding this for you Smiley http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~t-imai/imace1.html I don't know how helpful it will prove to be. I'm not really an expert on overclocking iMacs, however it can be done I assume by changing the location of some surface-mount resistors... but i'd look up some further information on how to do this before attempting it because it is quite possible to fuck up your computer

the killer will be your vid card, which is same as mine i think, a 8mb ATi rage 128. It needs a 16mb card minimum, and tehre's no real way to upgrade a iMacs video card. suckass, eh?

your best bet would be to sell the imac
if you don't have anough money for a new g4 imac or tower. you cou buy a 700mhz Snow imac from apple for around 700$

Snipe, you can upgrade the processor on an iMac (up to G4-500 I think).  There are some thrid party processors you can get (Sonnet comes to mind).

But, for that price, and figuring that you'll still have the old video card, I'd say it was time to upgrade.  

If you want another disposible machine, get a new iMac (but you wont be able to upgrade it either).  If you care about upgrading, because a new video card can make up for a slow processor, buy a new tower.  There is a place that will even trade in your old computer for cash towards your new one.  They sell refubed too, so if you can't afford new, you could find a good refubed model.  

And you wont be able to reuse that RAM.  Sorry

it was comon knowledge when people were buying imacs that they couldn't be upgraded untill sonnet came out with a upgrade for the early ones.

I'll guess that he found the web site.

Yes, either buy a new tower, or, bit the bullit and buy a new iMac for $1200, knowing that it will only be good for 3 years tops.  Remember, your 350 came out October 5, 1999.  That will make it 3 years old in a month.  

3 years is the expected life of most computers (if computer speeds double every 18 months, that makes it 1/4 speed).  Gaming requirements on computers is about as tough as it gets.  

Oh, and Snipe, why $3000?  You can buy a tower cheaper then that.  And thrid party CRT's are pretty cheap.

Ok then, I guess I'll just get a new iMac. How's ebay's reliability when it comes to computers? Or should I stick to something more stable? Cause I'm not really sure how many computers I can afford that apple offers. Umm...does anyone wanna mail me some money? I'll give you my address. If everyone sends a couple bucks, you could do me a great favor!!!  Grin You donate a couple bucks, I get a new computer? eh? eh? Doesn't that sound like a nice thing to do?
