and yet apple are advertising for a handwriting specalist type person.... Gesture user-interface patents applications and touch screen and interface research you can't help but think that they have some new product in the works.. and its hard to say that a contender wouldn't be a tasty Apple Tablet!

Are you referring to the one artist rendition of a tablet in this thread No one claims it's real, and the black and white line drawings are patents by Apple, not fantasy.
BTW, I bet Tablets + iPods + 17in MacBook Pro on April 1.... and the 13in MacBook [iBook] feb-march if we are lucky.

Somebody said in the comments: This thing is surprisingly easy to build and cheap. The hardware behind it is a P4 2Ghz. Its an acrylic Plate with clear edges. From the edges Infrared Light is projected into it. Where the finger touches it, th elight is reflected down trough the plate to a 640x480 webcam with an infrared filter. A little bit of processing and you get an image with dots where the fingers touched it. It does not sense the strength of the touch. Is this true?

Wish i had the knowledge to say, hardware wise im sure it doesn't take a huge ammount of CPU power, it shouldn't the feat is in the monitor. i can't quite see how the finger would accuratly reflect the llight down through the plate to the apparent webcam however - it dosn't sound accurate enough and from looking at the video the thing is pretty damn accurate. hard to know.

Rendering the 3D map images takes some CPU power I would think, maybe not as much as I think.

rgr true, its pretty googlemap-esk though. what amazed me was the responce times and how reactive the screen was. i don't understand how a infared sensitive webcam can be used from what you quoted before though as surely it would have to be set back a fair way from the actual screen surface.. so you would have a monitor about 3 feet deep or somthing daft? I have no idea at all but by god a tablet type thingy, or even just a 40inch apple display with that would be well stunning

You don't need a 40in. Apple Display BFG for one reason. You can't afford it.

WEEEEEEE HEHE ... Think of how much freaking stuff you could put on a 40" screen... although right now i'd be more than very very happy with a 30" ... or even a 23" as a 2nd screen.
