I personally use a iBook G4 (933MHz) for 60% of my time online and doing work. I personally find it to be a bit sluggish with applications like Pages or Keynote. However, I still find it to be a enjoyable user experience  surpassing my G5 (Rev A Dual 2.0). This being the 14" model I think the screen would benefit if they went widescreen. Anyway, I still prefer the G5 simply so I don't have to wait for it to catch up to me typing, but I guess it all depends if you need portability.

The fact is the laptops are going to get much faster in about 6 months time, and I wouldn't ever buy something using an old style processor when x86 is going to force change. Why settle for a iBook with low power when soon they will have iBooks that can match almost everything.

I stand buy my eMac recommendation, will hold resale value and hold off performance woes with it's 9600.

catch up to your typing? you're either running too many apps or you dont have enough ram. My 1ghz g4 ibook with the ram maxed runs just about everything well, and isnt sluggish as long as all my apps arent open at the same time.

Well I just got back from the apple store in The Westchester and the logicboard is fucked as well as some other parts, its unrepairable. The guy said to repair it would cost like 1800 bucks and that I should just buy a new computer. I looked at all the different comps in the store while my dad was talking to the guy and I just didn't really like the iBook for some reason. The Mac mini blew my mind and I think im gonna save to get the 1.42 mac mini with a superdrive and search for a cheap lcd or something thin online. Hopefully this means I can run some games and play with you guys! Thanks for all the input and help it was nice to get some advice from both old and new friends.

p.s. feel free to argue my choice =) and thanks again!

EDIT: what if any special specifications must this monitor fit to connect to a mac mini?

too expensive for its size and features, bah. don't get that one.

i'd suggest to go to newegg.com and check out the LCD monitors they have. DVI, <16ms reaction time and 17"... they're around $200, new.

Civic is on the money here...
good choice..just make sure before you write the check that you dont need the portability of the laptop.
Other than that, the minis are awesome!

That will run any of the games, and perhaps doom on VERY low.

Congrats and good luck.
Look around to see if you have have your drive recovered if you have the budget, and you wont have to start over with your music and other files..the  Hard drive is mostl likely fine.

yeah, this one has a very good price/performance ratio for a 17" LCD with DVI and <16ms reaction time. $199 is sweet.

doesnt the mini have a 32meg video card?  Roll Eyes
I dont think it will matter if he gets a 16ms FTF or a 25ms FTF. He wont be playing any modern games on it.  I would just get the cheapest one you can find.
