GS & GR

Well here is my contribution of knowledge from the Mac Gaming services arena.

GameRanger (GheiRanger, LamerRanger, etc...)
{you might not be able to tell, but i don't dig GR right now, heh}
This is what is known:
1)GR went down Thursday 5/24/01
2)Some people were able to log on as early as Saturday, but nothing in any quantity until Monday (quantity being 50+ ppl...)
3)It has been over a week since we have had _unreliable_ connectivity restored.
4)both utterer.com & gameranger.com went down at the same time, yet utterer has been up for a few days, where is the GR site?

From this information + a few rumors and private chats, I have 2 primary ideas about what might be happening.
Server Probs. this shit happens, it sux. But have you ever known any server that has a userbase of over 1000 people just go down? yes, so have I, but for more than a week??! If the rumors were true and it was a small technical glitch, then DNS updating takes at most 2 days (for world wide DNS updates). I am having a hard time buying the "server problems" argument, although it does have a little merit.

But what about the GR site?
Scott, tired of being ridiculed for his fascist ways, has decided to limit the max online users.
By doing this Scotty has created a supply and demand for his service, the demand is high now but the supply is low. In a capitalist economy that means the prices is high for the good/service. Add that to the fact that his web site is still down (for remodeling maybe?!). So, in a week Mr. Kevill says 'well boys and girls, my servers suck, so if you want better ones you can start calling me your God and pay me in cash or sheep.' Well, maybe not the sheep part, maybe dingos.

This is all just speculation, but hey, unless someone wants to tell us the Tru7h (aka "WTF is going on DAMNIT!!!") then this is all we can do.

GameScouter
This will rule, period. <-- see? right there, period. <-- oh! again!! {I digress...}
Version 1.4 is supposed to be killer, and familiar to GR (you may have seen the post here with the screenshots). 1.3 Preview is out but not publicly, if you want it to try out you can mail me. I have been on 1.3 for the past week or so (while GR was down, ahh what perfect timing). It's been fun but it is the old architecture. (1.4 is being re-coded in from the ground up) It's game support is lacking but that is why it is a preview release, people seem to forget that.

Anyway just thought I'd drop this note on you all and see what people say about it.

i find it funny that people whine bout how unreliable gr is when half the time i have tried to get on gs (ever, not just the past week or so), its been down

how are you guys even able to try to get on GS?  I don't have it yet.  I thought it was only in very limited beta testing.  It certainly isn't available on the website.

if you'd read the READme NOW file, which is obviously what you're supposed to do...you'd know that 1.3 was released only to I quote:

keep the dogs away

and satisfy those who wanted to see something.  Hopefully GS will be much better in version 1.4
