Well, the concern with that is you throw the food chain out of whack...and I hope it wouldn't concince people to feel like they don't need an active conservation effort or to continue developing efficient/clean energy sources.

Indeed. I personally find the sci-fi idea of having real colonies in Biosphere 2 like chambers or maybe an underwater colony to be quite interesting...it seems like this sort of thing would be especially valuable in those settings.
