Every time my computer crashes (hardly ever) all the files are deleted. Why is that? I was think about getting a new harddrive, what would be the best size and do i need to?

You can buy a PC/Mac hybrid drive and format it for your Mac. I have a 120GB drive that I used for my iMac when I had it, and it worked fine. All you have to do is buy a bare drive, and install it in a Firewire/USB2 external box, and voila!, you have a 120GB external drive. This worked well for me and I only shelled out $250 for the contraption.

if you have a tower just install the drive,
i paid 80$ for a 40gig drive 4 months ago. i think prices have droped now, i'd spring for a HD that is at least 100gigs. also i've heard that IBM HDs suck. Maxtor is a good hd manufacturer

I've got a Powerbook G3 (not the greatest but it gets the job done). I've thought about getting a external drive but never actually did. As jeb said the HD prices are lower than they used to be thats why i asked if i should buy one. I'll try to restore and back up before i buy the equipment. Thanks,
Yoda

yoda, for an internal hd for most macs, you just pick up an ata66 drive at compusa. mac's have been using ultra ata 66's for a while now. you can pick up a huge one for just over $100.
but if you are using a powerbook, there is a bit of a problem. hard drives are not user servicable parts on powerbooks. not really. if you aren't very competant with small electronics, and care about voiding your warrenty, don't do it yourself. powerbooks use the smaller drives (not 3.5 inch), and powerbooks are a pain in the ass to work on.
if you have firewire on it, go pick up an external firewire hard drive. they are fast and work great. if not, don't bother with usb, they are too slow and only good for back up purposes. otherwise, check into how much it will cost to get a new hd installed before jumping on it yourself.
also, why are you thinking about replacing it? because of the errors, or because you want more space? if it's just the errors, try doing a low level format and then testing the hd first. see if you have some bad sectors on it.

My powerbook is covered by the UT southwestern med center-Dallas (yes thats right, Medical Center, and im 14). and i have replaced my hd before when the other one fried. I want a new one for both because of the errors but also i would like more space.
