What was that you said.... Duck?

« on: February 28, 2004, 07:24:49 am »

I did something very silly on Thursday night and spoke my mind about Evill blocking NetFone as a way to push people into purchasing premium, while he was in the room.

I realize that this was a very silly, no insane, thing to do.

As a result I have managed to get myself an indefinite ban - and I am not getting any response to mails from GR.

Any suggestions or help available?

Buy premium...?

Hire a poet to write him a appology letter?

Make a film of you hitting yourself in the head til you cry, then say your sorry like you mean it then send it to evill...and send a copy to me too  Grin

You should see upon this as a blessing, its very easy to get hooked on GR, now you can't...sometimes i wish i got permabanned...  (not to be taken litterally by certain authoritys)

Toxic Joka,

Thanks for the suggestions - I have attmepted the poetry (well what I thought was a good apology via mail), which has been ignored.

The film of me hitting my head (against the brick wall) is work in progress, I will let you know where it is available.

The blessing part I can sort of understand, it is like trying to break an addiction, however due to my personal situation where I am at home looking after my kid and wife and dont get the chance to play in the real world that much, it is one that I would prefer not to be forced to break cold turkey at the moment.

I did look into buying premium, however the payment window is NOT secure, and I am a little uneasy in providing my Credit Card details on an insecure site.

I guess  I will just have to go up to bed at a reasonable time tonight and think about prayer a last resort.

Very easy to fix this one.....just go buy a new Mac, then get a new IP.  He can't track that.  Oh, and when you load up GameRanger, do the smart thing and make a new account too!

yeah that's one way. but i've seen him catch a couple of people that were on perma using a different comp. best way may be to write a nice kiss ass email and buy premium. (mb even two years at a time) i've also seen him perma somebody and tell them they can come back if they buy premium.

i was like that when i have paid for premium, but its been ok so far.. If you have a visa card, thats protected i think. Its just the others that are not as secure. But as i say mine have been alright when i have done it.

Are you sure that the paypal site (or whatever he is using) is NOT protected to use credit card?

if im not mistaken and correct me if im wrong, but all you need to do is replace your ethernet card. That will give your machine a different mac address. Ask your isp to change your IP address and get a new gameranger name and never speak of the incedent again.

Again, I may not know what Im talking about. Wink

Every ethernet card has a MAC (media address control) address. While we don't know for sure, I'm almost certain that this is what Evill uses to identify you for bans. So, theoretically, if you were to get a new ethernet card, you would be fine.

That said, Evill is a reasonable man, and I'm sure if you email him politely, you will get your resolution.

dingo, my advice:

pat yourself on the back in having a sense of standing up against evill and his untolerating power which he uses to control GR and the much of the online mac gaming community. the real argument over this topic was about 4-6 months ago, and after numerous flame wars nothing was accomplished except my leaving GR (voluntarily) and helping the community in different ways.

you might be able to bribe him with a kiss-ass email and money, but when a new mac game service opens a few years from now, you'll have wasted $50-200 on something that's free elsewhere. just remember, all video games are a waste of time, and spending money on wasting your time is for fools. giving money to scott for making playing games for fun a hassle is worse.

for those of you that have been interested in scott's bans:

the ethernet card trick doesn't work; you need to edit your machine's id number somehow, or get on a new mac.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - I guess that I am either going to have to cough up for a premium if that will lift the ban or give up on using the Mac as a gaming platform and think about going and buying a PC (yes I will now go wash my mouth out).

Kos Nomad, I did a second check on the payment page and it IS secure if you type the URL for payment. I clicked through from my webmail and it appeared not to be so because of the embedding of the payment window in bloody hotmail. Given that hotmail embeds the contents from the other server it appeared not to be on a secure link - that is a trick for the tired.  I should have paid better attention.

Toxic Joka, The tone of the conversation was not uncivil, nor was it heated. I did however point out some of the work arounds that had been mentioned in the past, guess that pushed a few buttons. I know better now.

I guess I need to see if upgrading to premium is going to get the ban lifted prior to me spending my money- however my emails to Evill have not returned so I guess I will never know.

Looks like my time enjoying the Mac for on line gaming is coming to a close as I cannot afford to replace a 16 Month old twin 1 gig G4 at the prices we have to pay in Australia.

Such is life I guess.

Yeah, that's it, spending your money on entertainment, that's the root of evil there.  You sound like some TV preacher on Sunday morning, telling the evils of TV.  This site and forum are based around gaming and GR.  Saying that everyone here is a fool is a great way to be listened to, isn't it?

If gameranger means a lot to you, I would go premium.

And for MAC-address, try using a router, you can change the router's MAC-address normally. And I suggest you download a new version of gameranger and install it.
Mb scott inserted some kind of tracking device into his program. But it can also work the same way Maya does and make an individual unique id based on several preffs of your computer...

Well I wish you all the luck, but it seems to me Premium is the best solution.

However its not just the ethernet card that has a MAC Adress... so do routers etc.. so if your behind one does this not mean that your router has been blocked if it is indeed the mac address which is being used by scot...
of course the other thing u can do is ghost your mac address...

I can't believe I forgot about this. In Panther, Darwin has MAC spoofing built in. (Previously you had to recompile your kernel.) To spoof your MAC, use the following command:

Code:
sudo /sbin/ifconfig en0 lladdr de:ad:be:ef:ba:be

de:ad:be:ef:ba:be is the new MAC address you want to use. It must be 12 digits long, using only hex (0-f), and separated by colons. Just remember, your MAC is reset to the default when you reboot, so add a script to run at startup if you want to make the change seem permanent.
