My solutions to The Maw (on Legendary) are definately based around ues of the Shotgun, Pistol, lots of nades, (plasma in particular) and patience.
Shotgun for the flood.
Pistol for the grunts & elites
and nades for both (plasma for dealing with flood @ long range, frags up close, and plasma all the time with Elites)
Patience comes into play when you know there are convenant & flood (or sentinels) fighting each other. Just sit back and listen to them blow each other apart.
So, here's how to most effectively use these things.
SHotguns, using them against the flood is usually a pretty straight forward concept:if it is still standing on its own power, fire. I take a perverse pleasure in letting them run at me then jump, and then blowing them out of the air right before they can take a swing at me. If theyre at long range (not very often on The Maw) use the pistol, and aim for the head and arms, takes them down pretty quick.
Pistol: The most effective use of the pistol is against Covenant, in particular Grunts. One shot to the head and they will drop, but even if you dont kill him the first shot, a quick second and third will drop him. As much as you might hear using the pistol against Elites, going for headshots and the like, that really hasnt seemed to work for me. So, my suggestion is that if an elite is giving you problems and you cant kill him at the moment, but want him to stop shooting you, pop him in the head a few times so he dives for cover, and as such, stops shooting, allowing you to take out other targets. (usually i suggest using Plasma grenades to take out Elites, especially the Brown & Black ones)
Nades: Frags @ close range with run-ins with the Flood, plasma at long range, since usually it will detonate before they get close to you, and take out most of the front-runners. Frags for me dont seem to work against the Covenant very well, unless youre dropping one in or around a cluster of dropped plasma grenades, which an Elite is conveniently standing ontop of. Frags are somewhat useful against Grunts, but to me it seems like overkill to use a frag, of which you have 4, to take out only three or four grunts, when you could take them out with the pistol, of which you have 120 +12 rounds.
So, for the Covenant, Plasma grenades i found the best, especially dealing with Elites. How you deal with them however, is akin to a game of Chicken. First clear out any other hostiles (grunts) and then try to throw a plasma grenade at an Elite, right when he starts to throw one of his own at you. The reasoning behind this is, that the Elite cant get out of the way of the plasma grenade, but, hopefully, you can get out of the way of the one he chucks @ you. It takes some perfeceting, but, it sure beats the hell out of trying to take them out head on with an AR
Patience: Pretty self explanatory...just find a good spot to sit while both sides rip into each other, then go out and deal with the survivors as you see fit.
If youre having problems with specific areas on that, or any other map, ask me in a PM or post, and ill explain as best i can.
By the way Kuza...The Maw is one of the easier levels to beat on Legendary
Lone
PS - BFG im still waiting for you to beat my record of 1:27 left on the timer at the end of The Maw =D
PSS - Everything but the Patience part of this post are applicable to all other parts of the game, maybe not entirely, but mostly. If you want advice on other parts of the game, weapons to use or tricks to places, id be happy to help.

i just went back to the game, and beat it on easy. i was also trying the warthog jump, but none of my guys drop nades, why is this?
for the later weapons i definatly found it helpful to carry a shotgun and machine gun. the shotgun is for the bigger members of the flood(and shooting them out of the air is fun) and the rifle is spraying the small packs of those...things. they just go pop pop pop and you're set.

Lol, Kuza, what is?
Anything needs explaining, im usually pretty good at it. Send a PM my way and id be happy to give you a hand.
Ok, thank Spike for having me decide to explain the intracacies of the Warthog Jump.
So, the way grenades are dropped, is the whenever a Marine dies, the computer runs a randomization code, to decide if the Marine should drop none, 1, or 2 grenades on the ground. Im assuming, that the chances of dropping 2 nades are much smaller than that of the Marine dropping none. So, what this means, is that every Marine could, in theory, drop two grenades when they die. But, this is statistically impossible, so this is what you do. It takes a long, long time, and alot of patience, but to get all those nades on the ground, get one Marine in your warthog (let two jump in, then tell one to get out) then drive them over to where you want to pile up the nades, tell them to get out, shoot them.
Now here is the problem, they probably wont drop and grenades, and this, is a problem. But what you have to do then, is just re-load the last checkpoint, and then try it again. Aaaaand again....aaaaand again...until he drops 1 or 2 nades (im usually satisfied with 1, but 2 never hurts if youre going for something huge)
You just have to repeat this with every single bloody marine, or, until you have as many nades as you want...then...well...have fun.
As to getting up ontop of the island in that map...not going to reveal that quite yet.
Good luck to ya!
PM me if you want.

I only have Halo on xbox but i was wondering if anyone else has played the winter multiplayer level and suceeded in getting a ghost up onto the sides of the level. All you need to do is get to the area where theres a ramp leading upwards and park a tank there. Then use the tank as a ramp and run your ghost onto the side of the map. Its awesome once your up there because you can see the entire map and are impossible to kill. The one problem though is its damn near impossible to park the tank onto the little ramp area.
Btw. Does the mac version even have the snow map?

If the map you're talking about is shaped like a horseshoe with a base at each terminus and has patches of slippery ice on the ground, then it's Sidewinder and is in the computer version.

Yea thats the one
In order to do the glitch though you need all vehicles on and someone to play with that won't try to kill you while you do the trick. In the middle of the map there's on one side 2 ramps leading up to a higher point where there are some caves farther along. Before you get to the caves there should be a little bridge where you should drive the tank over. Then park the tank so that the rampable end is facing opposite the canyon wall. Then grab a ghost and bring it up the same ramp but ramp off the end of the tank and try to land on top of the canyon.
spike ya cancerous cock growth how bout you play some more rs instead

Ok... when u are traveling about in the earlier part of the level outside... there is a ledge high above you where a ghost resides... now if you still have your rocket launcher (u can pick on up just before you get to this bit) and take carfull aim - you can hit the underneath of the ledge which blows the ghost right off the ledge... You, beiing very chuffed withyourself, then proced to hop into the ghost and kick some major flying ass

Hehe, i think i know what hte confusion is. BFG is referring to a part in Assault on the Control Room, in Halo SP, whereas Spike was referring to Sidewinder.
Hey BFG, any luck on Truth & Rec yet?

My favorite tactic in Halo is putting a tank on top of your base in blood glutch during a CTF match. It's always fun to hear the reactions from the guys on the other TV in the other room who have never seen this before.

How do you manage that? Lots of nades under the tank?
