     The Elder Gods are elements in "The Mythos", the background universe for many (all?) of H.P. Lovecraft's stories and books. Chthulu and Hastur are two of the Elder Ones whose names have expanded into wider use, so they may ring a bell for you.

     This is pretty nifty stuff, while we're on the subject: Propping up the Mythos.
