I'm tired of being creative.

So I go through life thinking I'm a fairly advanced Mac user - for my purposes anyways........

Then out of the blue I discover a folder on my hard disk that I didn't even know existed! ?HELP!

Here's the rundown -
? ? ? ? I use OS 9.04, mostly because I'm too lazy to upgrade. ?All is great, and having no problems with my machine. ?Then I'm using IE to open a movie file, which I do occasionally just because I like to browse my hard disk using the IE layout. ?I'm sure you've all done this before, if not just use this link: file://.*/

This allows you to browse your computer, which is just dandy. ?So I'm doing that and all of a sudden I come across a folder called "temporary items". ? You might have one of these too - it would be at an address something like file:///Hard%20Disk/Temporary%20Items/

Back to the point of all this - the temporary items folder contains a couple hundred items loooooong since deleted from this computer. ?It's like a random archive of stuff - pictures, a couple sounds, random email messages that I remember receiving well over a year ago. ?There's stuff in the folder from the earliest days of my machine. ?So at this point I'm thinking, "cool" and wondering why I'd never seen it before. ?So I go to look at my hard disk outside of IE...and it's NOT THERE!

So then I think....well, it must be invisible. ? but its not. ?ResEdit shows no trace of Temporary Items, nor does FileTyper. ?It just simply isn't there.....I can't edit the contents, I can only view them.....

Incidentally, this probably has nothing to do with IE. ?Some of the documents in the folder date back from before I had even downloaded IE. ?Plus, NS showed them too, although it is not quite as efficient in displaying file heirarchies.

So, in conclusion to this ramble, I am thoroughly confused by the presence of this folder. ? What is it? ?What can I do with it? ?Does anybody know?

I'm not sure exactly, but it sounds like it is caching files you intended to trash, but I'm not really sure. I know you could get rid of that stuff in OS X via the Terminal, but I'm not sure about OS 9.

I know the file you are talking about Loud, but I can see it with ResEdit...  that's the weird part to me.  I haven't used OS 9 in a while, but I thought that rebuilding your desktop cleared that file...

Sorry, not much help here.

Hmm...you're all wrong.

I'm still in the dark - Ace seems to have the right idea, but there are a few items in the folder that I never actually had on the computer and had deleted.  Example - a flash animation that says "loading"

I have no idea where that would have come from....I have never seen it before and I don't remember it from any website.

I have rebuilt the desktop numerous times since these files were created...if fact some of them have been created in the last few days.  Grift I dunno why I can't see it with resedit.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?  (nice one Bondo)

If you want to get rid of it.. download FileBuddy and make the folder visible.

Okay....If you guys remember the reason why they deemed 9.0.4 bad.  Here's the thing...(I'm too lazy to search for the tech thing at apple.com).  They said that on OS 9.0.4, there was like some huge bug, where cached files would be saved, and your HD space would keep going down over prolonged use.  No clue what's the story w/ 9.1 and up tho.  Check it out...Update me too.

Thanks Wrath - FileBuddy did the trick.

It was still a little convoluted though....the Temp Items folder was not actually "invisible" in its Finder flag, instead it was just invisible in the sense that it couldn't be seen.  However, I used FileBuddy to move it on to the desktop, and then it magically appeared.

After browsing the contents of the folder, I realized that anyone still using OS 9.04 needs to empty it regularly.  Among 1047 files from the past 2 years I had 1.2 gigs of HD space being wasted.  Included was a blank image in Photoshop that had huge proportions.  That file took up 1 gig by itself.  So....thanks for helping me free up that space....
