Nice article Loth. I had forgotten about the Alien and Sedition Acts (at least relating them to current actions). As somewhat of a libertarian, do you at all ally with the current administration? I know many liberatarians vote Republican, but this president has abandoned many of the liberatarian principles that Republicans usually claim to pride. Who are you looking at in 2004?

Tasty, it is looking shitty for 2004 for the conservative libertarian types, which I consider myself to be. Bush steps all over civil rights, so he won't get my vote. None of the Democrats have really stood out to me as being worthy of my vote, save maybe Kerry. Frankly, as it stands right now, I'm more concerned about getting Gray Davis recalled because there are some good candidates to replace him, unlike Bush.

I still would think that Dean would appeal most to Libertarians out of the Democratic group. Here is why I think that is:

1. He favors state's rights on gun control.
2. He demands that the federal budget always be balanced.
3. His stance on civil unions and gay rights: the government staying out of people's personal lives.
4. He favors repealing the Patriot Act.

Because of these libertarian ideals, I think Dean is not only the most qualified but the most electable of the Democratic crop. Check him out.

'Course, there's the eternal cynic's problem: we all know that whoever is elected will immediately ignore his campaign promises.

I would only vote for Howard Dean if I were supremely confident he would ignore his campaign promises.

Guess I don't understand that since you didn't really address the reasons I set forth for why I thought he might appeal to you. I'm really more of a Kucinich man myself, but I don't think his views would match up well with yours or Loth's. Just please, please don't vote for Bush.

I did think of one possible scenario that works out well though: Bush wins again, continues his agenda, and the country goes into one of its worst periods ever. People discontinue their support for the president's policies and elect a social democrat like Kucinich. Yeah, I know,  its just a pipe dream.

What would be really great is if Bush got re-elected, continued his policies, there was a revolution, and a new-and-improved, updated form of our government was created (see the Martian Constitution thread for an example). Now THAT'S a pipe dream.
