Can someone explain the symbols...?

This may be yet another useless thread, but at least it's off Rapid bashing.  And since GR is down (at least for me), why not.

Now, can someone explain to me why so many of the newbies all use symbols in their names? ?Is it that they can't think of any cool names (guess all the best are taken or something). ?

Maybe I'm just getting old (which, I am), but what's the appeal? ?Seems like that style was best left with the script kiddies. ?There have always been a few around, but now it's like a plague of frogs or something.

I have that same gripe, it seems to me that it's getting harder to read a persons name then actually getting to know the individual in question. I think SWAT /\/\att was clever (and original), but beyond that, it just gets ridiculous...


I doubt it has to do with age though Grifter, more like intelligence, or lack of it...

I hope u guys won?t come up with some explanations of our good old friend Dr. Sigmund Freud regarding picts and icons and typography!
Although u take this as gossip and easy stuff  y don?t u show those newbies some manners of behaviour, show them the way to the forum for example, might help, not all of them of course (yes, i have an 11year old canadian child in mind!)

i think all these newbies ASCI up their names becuase they live in the age where is is "cool" to be a 1337 h4x0r d00d. As it says in that one flash movie, "use leet-speak so they know you're not a noob" Well, that couldn't have backfired more. Now you use "leet-speak" and we know you are a noob.

i think they all do that to be noticed. its kinda stupid though, because it just draws attention to their badness. i tend to over look people with symbols more because its annoying and hard to read. kind of like when people write in caps-locked only. when i was a newb i just kept my mouth shut and learned, but then again, that was when i played avara and eagle watch.. as anarchy related to, times are changing.

Geek, I know what you mean, when I started out and was playing against the best SiX and Seals had to offer right off the bat (getting my ass kicked every time), I was shy and silent, slowly learning what it was all about.  As time passed, my skill grew and with so did the amount I talked.  Nowadays the newbies just jump right in without learning the ways and that is why we suddenly have dumbasses (I can't remember any R6 dumbasses really, I suppose some of the SBRs like Peekay and Romeo might fall into that category but...).  The respect of your gaming elders made everything work.

My intention was: tell them that if they want a kind of reply chattingwise that is adressed clearly to one of those probably-newbies, they?d better not force us to break our fingers and spending endless time b4 one can write their names correctly! Sure it?s cool, but it?s not that comfortable.
On the other hand wouldn?t it be a good idea to put clansigns at the end of the names 4 example? (tired of collecting brackets during a game   )
Of course I?d leave mine as it is ?cause there are no more ROA around

I think i've figured out more of the thinking behind the "symbols". it goes something like this:

"Hey.. maybe if i fuck up my name enought they won't be able to read it and may mistake me for a respected player!"

this is just my un-proffesional analisys, not backed by any research, outside of 3 minutes staring out a window thinking of what the hell it was i was gonna post.

I hate the infinite onging symbols, but what about just one? I have my name written as: ?NiPE. Is the ? too much? or the caps letters with the little i? I'm debating whether or not to change it...anyone have some thoughts?
