A blast from the past...

« on: April 07, 2003, 07:39:20 pm »

http://www.msnbc.com/news/895392.asp?0cv=CA01

Story pretty much explains it all. Post reactions or comments here.

My comment is that the hypocrite French government can chew on this and realize that they look like fools.

Heh, well that article clearly states that you shouldn't jump to conclusions until the further tests have been made, so don't. Just sit back and relax, if they're WMD's then they are, if they're not, they're not, you'll find out, rest assured.

A good word for times like this is allegedly.

I didn't greatly doubt that Saddam had some sort of WMD, but then I never thought his having WMD would justify the war as it happened.  Like kami said, lets just wait and see and not jump to conclusions.

They just said in the news that the found substances aren't chemical weapons.

I believe they were rockets that had either been declared or weren't banned in the first place.  Or that was an erroneous report and there were none.

As far as I know that was their first thought but after some tests it seems that the substances are only pesticides.

well, i would be careful to make judgements at this point. what the allied military says at their press conferences is mostly bs.

if u need an example, take the tank that shot at the hotel in baghdad were all the journalists stay. some us general stated there were shots fired from the lobby, so he opened fire. just that the lobby shows in the opposite direction... and like 10 journalists from different countrys said there were no shots fired from the hotel at all.

just a coincidence they killed the al-djazeera correspondant? i bet he was gettin on some guys nerves...

I haven't seen a good reason for them to open tank fire on a building occupied by journalists.  What, is there no level between no action and blasting it with a tank?  Use some moderation of action when you know the building is full of innocents and look for gunmen to take out with rifles, not tanks.

As for the Al-Jazziera guy, he died when the headquarters for the station (seperate building) were bombed, yeah, that is a fucking coincidence right?  We just happen to bomb the headquarters of a news agency that happens to slant things the oppisite way as the US press (but not really slant worse).  It is a low point of the war that we are now attacking civilian targets just to hide differing opinions.

You don't have to think that they were deliberate deeds. Although the military spokesman's explanation was lame, it doesn't mean that the tank firing at the building was anything but a mistake.

Well it may be a mistake, maybe not. This administration has given us plenty of reasons to doubt. But the military can be wrong, a lot. Just look at the bombing of the weapons factory in Algeria under Clinton... oh, woops we realized it was an aspirin factory, but not until after we bombed it. Intelligence fails, both militarily and in the minds of our leaders.

Tasty, in the end, perhaps it was only the tank commanders fault? Perhaps he just made a big mistake. Why do you think they would actually bomb the Palestine hotel, and therefore looking bad in everyone's eyes, just to get rid of some pesky journalists?

If you are refering to the Al-Jazziera guy who was killed, he died in the bombing of the Al-Jazziera building, not the hotel explosion.  I don't really question the motives of the hotel accident, I'm sure they didn't mean to hurt anybody (but the one they claim attacked them) I think they just overreacted and were negligent in the journalist's deaths and should be held accountible.

Well teh chem weapons story when I first posted it seemed to be very convincing, without the words "allegedly" and "possibly" in it. Anywho, this next piece of info should be taken with a grain of salt, but appears to be more credible than the first report even though it is from Fox.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,83821,00.html

Any level of radiation that high (hard to fabricate that) is dangerous in any respect, if it would be used for nuclear bombs or just for dirty bombs.

As for the journalist thing, all of us honestly dont have the foggiest idea in hell what the motivations for the attacks were or why the locations were targeted (besides the Palestine hotel tank incident) so we shouldn't be speculating.

For the journalists that died in the Palestine hotel, I believe there was a Spaniard, a German, and a Brit. All of the journalists know the consequences of war, and they SHOULD have realized that they are not impervious to the conflict just because they are staying at a relatively posh hotel in the center of Baghdad watching the airstrikes and bombings from an elevated view. They took the risk and they paid their lives to cover a story.
