So - the great Jobs has declared OS 9 dead today amid much fanfare and hoopla.

This has sparked all manner of debate over at Inside Mac Games, with various people coming out in defence of both systems (9 and X) and the funniest thing is that it's all sounding rather like a rehashed Windows/Mac OS debate (mine has faster graphics, mine's more stable...blah blah)

I'll eventually migrate to X (cos we HAVE to basically) but I'm sure going to miss 9 - and Rogue Spear for that matter. Mind you, if a developer announced Raven Shield or Ghost Recon for X I suppose that would soften the blow somewhat... Wink - so what think all of you?

Asterax... why not? ?I just watched one in mine (OSX). ?Missing an update or something?

Old news yes, older arguments... even more so. ?I remember people not wanting to go from 8.6 to 9... and people not wanting to go from 7.6.3 to 8... and even (and this brings a tear to my eye) from 6.0.8 (probably the most stable a Mac has ever been) to 7. ?I lived them all... and there were a bunch of people crying that it wouldn't be the same each and everytime... and you know what... they are right... it's not the same... things have to get better or they will not continue to exist. ?It's just too bad they aren't as stable as old 6.0.8 ....

OS 9, people actually still use that rubbish?

I've been using OS X for 8 months now without any real problems, I play R6 through classic so it isn't like I have to cut off OS 9 games.  Still, RtoCW is my new game so even that wouldn't be a concern.

BTW, what system number was the Apple II because that is where I started.

Grifter, I must be missing a update or something. My DVD player on Mac OS X just crashes, it's probably due to my stupid scheme of me downloading some DVD Accelerator..boy was THAT stupid.

Yeah, unfortunately I can only watch DVD's in Mac OS 9.

900 posts Bondo, I find that disturbing.

Yes it is quite disturbing, especially since I've only been posting for around 9 months.

I also had problems with DVDs in OS X but I dled an update that fixed it, are you fully up to date on your OS X upgrades?

I bet you are on to something with that DVD accelerator theory Asterax... ?I know there was an issue when OS X first came out... but I'm pretty sure 10.1 completely fixed it (10.0.2 was supposed to). ?I didn't try until 10.1.4 came out, but it works flawlessly for me... and knowing you, I'm sure you are up to date.

One of the lingering problems with OSX (and any Linux/Unix system) is a good uninstaller. ?Some programs I have no idea where it's storing some of the files (in some of those directories you have to go poking around for that are hidden in OS X. ?So even if you try to rip that suspect app out there's no telling. ?Well, we are only a few short months away from 10.2, so that's probably as good a time as any for a complete reinstall (I still like to do that once a year or so... keeps things running so much better). ?Good luck with it.

Oh, and Bondo, not that you would care much, but for current info, RS runs like dog shit in classic mode.  Even on my dual ghz box it doesn't run as good as on my iBook in OS 9 (but with the dual ghz in OS 9 it's a terror).  So all these RS players are still stuck with OS 9 a while longer... since it will never be carbonized (unless Ubi Soft has it in mind, which I wholeheartedly doubt.)

Tears about OS 9 dying? Fuck that, I'm breaking out the champagne. I used to love OS 9, but ever since 10.1, I have been hooked. Now, don't get me wrong, OS 9 has its upsides. It's faster on the whole than X. It has a lot more games. But after using X consistently, I can't imagine going back to a non-*nix OS. Classic blows ass. It's just not feasible for gaming.

As for DVD's, yes this is a problem. I had no problems until the 10.1.4 update. DVD's still work fine when just played from my laptop, but when I try to use a second monitor (aka my TV) it bitches about an improper configuration and shuts down. I have to mirror displays to get it to work.

And GRIFT, our old LC with System 6 owned, but I also liked System 7 a lot.

I too am an OS X freak... having it since the beta and only running OS 9 for RS now a days.

BTW Ace, I have a floppy of Mac OS 1a that came with the old Mac 256k... just as a collector's item.  I'm afraid to even put it in a reader to see if it is still ok.

Oh, and to an earlier question by Bondo... I think it was called Apple DOS back then if I remember... I could be wrong.  The just started getting Apple ]['s in my highschool when I graduated.  And in college they had already gone to the Mac's.  (in my highschool we learned Fortran on old punch cards and basic on a Trash 80.... and those were for us lucky guys... let's not talk the DEC terms.... ouch paper cut!!!)

OS 9 is far from dead...

The only time OS 9 will be dead, will be the day that my fuckin graphic design industry says it is dead.

You can;t print to printers, and I can tell you for fuckin sure, you can't print to imagesetters better then OS 9. I use it everyday! all day! all year! all millenium!

nothing beats it.

So stop your bitchin!

steve jobs can declare os 9 dead all he wants, but classic won't die until the user base dies. photoshop 7 was a big step, but until kevill gets GRX out, adobe and macromedia get their entire product line cocoa-ized, and everyone with g3 processors upgrades, OS 9 will live on and be the dominant mac os.

Or, like all the other major OS changes... until some new kit comes out and you can't get OS9 drivers for it. since apple isn't supporting it anymore... =P

But I know guys that used OS 6.0.8 until they had to switch to 8.5 because none of their programs would work anymore....

Yeah, Bondo, refering to your ealier post saying that you run R6 through clasic, Thats 'cause it's not as complicated as RS, so you can run it there, try running RS in clasic, It's all jerky  etc.  Wink

What, and RS wasn't jerky already in OS 9?  My computer is fine enough but RS ran like shit.  I'm still trying to figure out which came first.  Did the fact that the game sucks make it seem like it doesn't run well, or does the fact that it doesn't run well make the game suck.

LOL,
I have no idea what you are talking about Bondo.... maybe you need to trade in that 4mb video card for something a bit more powerful.  RS was never jerky even on my old G3 350 (as long as I had that Radeon video card in it).  Now on my iBook, RS starts to become a little jerky... but that's because the iBooks have the worst video in all of macdom.

But when I run RS in classic.... ugly.  Even on the dual 1ghz with the GeForce4... classic slows the frame rate down to where single player feels like playing a 16 person game on a 56k host.  Classic mode just sucks for RS.  Not to mention that the vidoe gets screwed up on Classic all the time.

But on my good machine... RS runs as smooth as R6 or UT.  That video card comes in handy.  (even on my not good machine that just has a great vidoe card... RS runs as smooth as R6).  I've played RS on many machines... 4 meg video card... don't wast your time, game will suck,  8 meg vidoe card... turn down all video settings or still chop city.  16 meg vidoe card... now we are talking.  No issues anymore.  32 meg video card... there was ever a problem?  GeForce4 video card.... this game kicks ass man... who ever thought it was choppy.  They're nuts.

4mb card eh?  Try GeForce 3 (with a 400MHz CPU and 380 MB RAM).  But I guess that just goes to show that the fact that the games sucks did come before it running like crap  Wink

maaaaan, i just upgraded to X and just to have 9.2.  from 8.6! I never found the need to( till now) and still, i dont use X. I use it for graphics and  Destructo is right about the print industry!  All my classmates in College have X but still use 9.2 all the time. So 9 will live on for a long while.(if not why did Apple pack in the same box with X?)

I've been to OSX and back, and i can safely say im still a 9 fan. I had X for a few days, and I really liked it, but it's not home to me.  9 is still alot more smooth to me and while it isn't as... cool.. it's served me faithfully and damnit, it's not dead yet!  Cheesy I've had a mac since i could walk, and X is unfamiliar territory to the veteran user...but I'm going to eventually give X another try once it's more stable and bug-less. Because as said before, i'm going to have to make the permanent transition someday.. but for now, 9 is still my wub Smiley

ps- does anyone know if PS has been ported to X yet? Adobe has been taking a hell of a long time to do it, i just wonder if they're finished yet..
