Typhy
Thats BS. NO MAC can ever run a PC operation system as fast as a PC!!
No emulation can do that b/c it does not support the CPU features it does not support all hardware features. This post was stupid. I never saw a MAC running Virtual PC wit Windows as fast as a PC can do that!
And i saw many MAC and PCs in my life.
I use both at home and at work - and i have to say that the performence of OS X is much more worse than of WinXP. I like the OSX more but the performence is really damn worse.

You saying that "Any PC" Can run Windows faster than a mac can, Umm... so you're saying that a 100mhz PC runs windows faster than a Dual Ghz G4? Hmm.. Explain your reasoning in that.

Im talking about more or less actuall systems not about antiquarils!
But even a PIII 500 MHz can run it more fast then the dual G4 - If u have read a bit more u would know that the dual is more or less a fake - it dont give u more performence . excepts in progs that are made for the DUAL G4 Procs.
AND i never said :
" ANY PC "

Well I didn't bother reading the second page and most of the third, so forgive me if someone already said somethig like this, but I just wanna say why would PCman be on a forum used by mac gamers? Lets think a little people. Geek--your posts were making sense unlike most of the others, until you got to the "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....ever play it?" one. Anyway....yeah....
I'll just show my trademark sniping guy now since I have nothing more to say.

This is a headache question. Mac's are so much better than Pre Computers. I spend a lot of time arguing with some people in school. They are so dumb. You like a peecee if you've never used a mac. PC's are a headache. Constantly breaking and you have to get a new one in at most a year. My friend has a 3 year old imac and it can still run new games. With a PC you'll be lucky to play a game in 5 month's without it breaking. My friend bought a beautiful 3000 dollar pc, cd burner, dvd player, 60 gig harddrive. Its horrible. Nothing works on it. The games don't work you can't even double click icons. Have you ever tried to search on a pc? It will find every word containing a letter of what you wrote. Watch the G4 at mac.com.

all it boils down too is you use what you were raised on. i've been using macs since i was 5 (i'm almost 17 now), so i have a slight bit of loyalty to them. 12 years of one platform will do that.

and i am probably the most die hard mac fan you will ever see.
hell if apple were to disapear tomorrow i would still use my mac for years to come.
let's see a pc user claim that.

You guys keep talking apples and oranges.
You are NOT talking about computers, you are talking about PLATFORMS. The mix of a computer with an operating system.
If you really want to find out which is faster, and by how much, there's one test that can be very close to test just the HARDWARE... just install Red Hat Linux on the PC and Yellow Dob Linux on the Mac.... then do a bake off. Run the same apps doing the same tasks.
Now, if we are talking platform, it's all speculation and user preference at that point. I use 6 different platforms most days (Mac OS X, Windoze 2000, Linux on Mac, Linux on PC, Solaris on Sun, HPUX on HP). All have their own little twists. If I had my choice about it, the only one I'd quit using is Windoze. I can do everything I do at work from my iBook except submit my Time and Attendance or Expense Reports (home grown apps for Windoze). I suppose I could still do those with VPC, but that's still Windoze, just on my Mac Hardware (yet another platform).
The point being... in average business.... cpu speed doesn't mean much, as the UI (user interface) is what really slows down work. The computer is usually idle, waiting for information. So CPU speed is secondary to ease of use. Hell, Linux or Solaris on intell runs much faster (then Windoze on the same hardware), but the reason it's not adopted for the desktop has more to do with UI then anything else.
I'm saying this because the Mac as a design computer and Windoze as a business computer are old arguments that don't carry much weight anymore. Photoshop works for the average user just as well on the PC as it does on the Mac (at least as well as games run on the Mac compared to how they run on the PC). Platforms are all about need and preference. Can the one you really like using do what you need?
Don't get me wrong... I still think Windoze is the buggiest piece of code to ever be shipped (they do ship the alpha release.. I do believe it!!) But it's an OS, not the whole PC. I also think Mac Hardware is better (for me). I believe that RISC is the way to go (too bad the chip makers aren't as big or fast as the CISC boys), and the form and funcion of Macs are beyond any other. I'd not trade my iBook for any other laptop out there. A full powered system in the body of a sub-notebook... that's what a laptop should be to me. Ace, your powerbook is fine.... a better choice for you, since it's your only Mac, but I'd still take that and run VPC or Linux if I had to over running any Dell or Sony or Compaq laptop.
On a side note, one of the funniest thing is, in everyday life games are the most workout any computer platforms get. (for consumer platforms, not servers)

Grift, you wouldn've said we talked "apples and oranges" if you'd have read my post on page 2 of this thread. Maybe THEY talk smack, but I don't. I suggest you read through my post again carefully. I apologize for the writing on both these and earlier posts - if they're confusing, don't bother telling me.

Oh, I read it.....
But you still take the Mac and PC's as platforms, not as hardware vs Software. You mention Windoze being part of the problem, but you stop there. When talking about your Mac and it's performance, you are only talking about in regards to apps in OS X or OS 9 (you didn't say which).
I'll give you another example.... Right now, I have three Mac platforms running at my house. A Cube running OS X, A dual 1ghz G4 running OS 9, and an G3 running Linux. Now, first assume that all three were running on the dual 1 ghz (because all three can)... they are still 3 platforms. Which one is faster? (you are now asking which operating system runs fastest on this one piece of hardware). OS 9 BTW. Now, do you expect these same OS's to perform the same way on all three machines (you'd be wrong... Linux is a bit faster on the G3)?
Yes, Operating systems are half the equation... hardware being the other.. sprinkle in a bit of optimization of the OS for the Hardware selected (OS X is optimized for G4's, not G3's... taking advantage of shortcuts in the chip architecuter).... etc etc etc.
In other words... unless you want to take two hardware kits.... and apply multiple OS's and apps to all of them to do a side by side bake off.... all that really matters is what you really like to use. Whatever that is... is the better computer for you. Speed is mostly a myth (key word there... mostly).... when talking about PC's vs Apples... what matters is can it do the job you want and which do you like using more.
Yes, you do mention form factor a little as well WF... which is another aspect of why you would like one more then another. It has nothing to do with performance but taste. And let's face it, most Americans don't have much taste (or shows like Opra and Jerry Springer etc would never be on the air). So, that helps explain why the Mac's don't do as well here

Well in my opinon, Macs are better. You my ask why. I have a G3 b&w 350mhz 512ram, running 8.6 adn its still alot faster than my Dell P4 1.8 with 512 ram, running Windows 2000.
G3 came out in 1998 and P4's in 2001.Thats three years diffrence!!!!!

First off let's get something straight, of course MACS are better than PC's, yes I know, this is my opinion!!!
Hologram, does not know what he is talking about!!! First off, you say that OSX runs slower that WinXP....well my first question would be, what kind of hardware are you running OSX on. I mean, os x is built for G4 and up (soon the g5, however, I can still run os x on my g3 but of course its slower. Also, you say that a Pent. III 500mhz can run faster than a dual G4? ARE YOU KIDDING!!!! Incase you don't know a mac MHz is ALWAYS about roughly 2x more the MHz in equivalence with a PC. For example, a g3 500MHz iBook, is equivalent to 1GHz PC. So a dual g4 which is 800MHz is approx. 1.6GHz PC. But all that aside its not the MHz that = performance, its the pipeline quantity and size. This is what is called the MHz myth. You may have heard of it as the Pipeline Tax and so the g4 is made with far less pipeline than a PC uses and so thats why Mac's are always faster than PC's
Also on a side note, for those who use Mac's and PCs on a regular basis....why is it that Mac's after they crash (and granted I would say that they do crash more-not alot more, but more-than PC's do) all you have to do is reboot and wait for the smiley face and that's it!! everything is back to normal within minutes. Whereas, when a PC crashes all hell brakes loose!! meaning that you need to call a technician to come in and fix the damn problem and when you ask him what the problem was, they can't even answer the question...AND!! all your files end up in other folders...icons on desktop go missing etc etc etc but this was just a side note and my 2cents..
GO MAC!!!
