I eat to live.  Besides that, i'm a freshman at a community college(way better than striaght university, for more than one reason).  I am looking for a job.  I checked out an apple store for a job, but you need to be 18, so in about a month I could apply.  Keeping my eyes open for jobs.  I do help my mom's buissness if need, such as IT stuff and data entering and other crap.  She started her bussniss over a year ago and is quickly growning.  They handle much of hospitals billing through out the U.S. And my dad is a high school teacher, part time professor (mainly psychology), and occasional psychologist one on one with people.

Rob, I've toutered some students at the local community college.  In many ways the classes are harder, because they have to be if they are going to make sure that they transferr (the students that I toutered were at a CC that will refund the money for any class that doesn't).

But, I wouldn't say it's better.  Going to college is as much a growth experience as an academic one.  Almost everything I needed to know for work I learned at work, or in my graduate studies.  The stuff I learned as an undergrad is good, it makes me a well rounded person.  But living on campus, being on your own, having to worry about all the things that you will one day have to worry about is a good thing.  Being in a safe (and colleges are pretty safe) environment where you can push all your limits, and not end up a homeless guy on the street is a good thing.

College is about a lot more then just going to classes.

What I said was a personal opion.  In my case going to a CC is the best choice.  Due to bad high school grades(below 2.0), I was limited.  Never the less, I recommed a CC general edu to anyone.  Universities use there professors in research.  As a result, a new freshman often get professors that may not beable to deliver the information in a manner students need.  Some university professors can not communicate clearly in the english language, yet the university highers professor for researh.  Also, professors may loath teaching to freshman classes they are stuck with.  This can result in a poorly structured course, now that a professor has his university, he could careless about the students.  As for a CC professor battles and competes to be recognized, so a university will pick them up, or they truly enjoy teaching.  This can create better learning enviorments.  Also, unarguably CCs are cheaper.  Although, you shouldn't judge education only on price, it sure is a bonus.

As for, "Going to college is as much a growth experience as an academic one".  You can experience going away from home at a CC also.  You can be away from home and be at either types schools.  Personally, I know many people out of state attending my CC.  And whats wrong with exploring what fields you might like in a CC as apose to a UC? After all, it is cheaper. As I am, going to a CC and transfering. I will be moved out by then to "experience" these things you discribe.

rob, i don't know of many big universities where freshmen actually see a professor.  full professors usually only teach high level courses.  we had mostly ta's, instructors and a couple associate professors.

lets just say that it isn't common.

rob, much of your previous opinion involved why it was not as good at universities to have freshmen instructed by professors (and you listed out reasons).

i was pointing out that at most public universities, freshman usually are not instructed by professors, and don't have that list of problems you mentioned.

I've only had full professors teach me. And they all speak English natively other than some of my CS professors (hey, what do you expect after all).

they have full professors teaching freshmen at ucla?  ok, usc.  had to say it though.

that surprises me.  full professors have to stay published.  once they get to full professor around here, they have their class schedules reduced, and then they get the pick of the classes.  while there was a full professor slated on one of my freshman classes, it was actually taught by a ta.

For the pre-scholarship 30 grand a year, it damn well better be full professors teaching every one of my classes.

Yeah, USC is a private school. You can tell the public schools in California because they are either UC-Wherever (ie UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc.) or CSU-Wherever (ie CSU-Coors Light... err, Chico).

i have full profs teaching 3 of 5 classes, all in the humanities. almost all of my classes are in lecture/discussion format, meaning the professors lecture but not teach? only in one of my classes does a full professor actually instruct, and it is an honors class.

Yeah, USC is the school for people who couldn't get into UCLA and wanted to waste an additional 15k on an inferior education  Cheesy

For the record, 2 of my 3 classes are taught by professors, and the other class is lectured by 4 professors, and taught by an associate professor.

My job has many duties, ranging from food prep and washing dishes to minor construction work and splitting wood. But hey, for $9/hour plus room and board for three nights a week i'm happy.
