Gaming consoles...

Here is my question/thought : I am looking to buy a PS2, the games are sweet and its just a great gaming console. But, I am thinking of waiting until the next generation console comes out. Will there be a PS3? I know it took like 7 years for PS2 after PS1, and the capabilities for PS2 are awesome, so since this console can already display DVD imagery, will there be a need for a PS3? And if so, how long do you think it will be before Sony decides to develop it? I dont really think you can get much better than PS2, it has DVD and CD technology, so how much further does it need to go?

Any thoughts or opinions, or just the facts would help me greatly in making a decision...thanks guys/gals

Well, the PS3 will come out, no later than 2005.  I'm sure it will be backwards compatible because that is something Sony would seem to do.  Or you could do what I've done with the PSX and to a lesser extent the PS2...buy it used a few years late and play catchup.  I got the PSX in May of last year in a trade for a DC game.  Can't say I got the value out of it because I didn't play one good game on it really (I had already played GT2 on my computer and on my DC using Bleem so it really wasn't appealing anymore).  The PSX was just a barren system for good games.  I got my PS2 this July for $150 so I saved a little.  It isn't faring that much better than the PSX did for me.  GT3 was fun for a few months but the tracks get dull playing them so often for so long.  GTA3 is not all that IMO like some would claim, then again, I find violent games to be in general much worse than games rated E.  Just like violent movies tend to suck (although in this case R rated movies tend to be as good or better than lesser rated movies as they are able to handle more complex issues.  But video games are not movies and that isn't a needed element.  So feel free to wait if you can, or buy used...or best of all, buy a Gamecube which is the Mecca of creative video gaming.  Also, it won't be obsolete for another 5-6 years...not 3-4 like the PS2 and Xbox (obsolete refering to the release of software not technology).

well bondo,
no one can blame a latent childhood love of nintendo. However as the general public passes the age of 13 "mature" games are more loved that bright shinny lights and charicters geared towards 4 year olds.
kilzo definatly go for the ps2, some of the best sports games are on ps2, racing games, fps games, a couple of good roll playing games like FFX. oh i forgot to mention GTA3, and the upcoming Vice city on the 29th.
Tony Hawk 4 is coming out soon i guess, same with grand turismo 4.
buy a game cube to play, uh resident evil and some other random childrens games.
its up to you, make the right choice
