Yes, I know it is almost 2003 now but DVD releases are like that...I've finally finished watching all the movies I was considering to make my top 15 list of 2001.  After viewing 71 films rating from the completely excellent to Scary Movie 2 (worst film of the year) the following is my list of the best 15 films released last year.

1. A Beautiful Mind
2. Donnie Darko
3. Waking Life
4. Lord of the Rings
5. Moulin Rouge
6. Chunhyang
7. Amelie
8. Gosford Park
9. No Man's Land
10. The Man Who Wasn't There
11. The Devil's Backbone
12. Black Hawk Down
13. The Majestic
14. The Royal Tanembaums
15. Frailty

Although this makes up the top 20% (roughly) of the movies I saw, they are all top quality movies as I am somewhat selective in what I watch so there could be another 70 really average to bad films I could have watched to make 15 seem more exclusive...but alas it remains the same with having not taken that extra time.  I must also note, the Academy Awards for Best Actor and Actress were horribly chosen as both the respective films were not good and the acting was not exceptional.  The winners should have been Russel Crowe and Judi Dench (Iris).

Well Im not sure what year these where made (2001 or 2002) but my votes go to:

1. Fight Club
2. Seven
3. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
4. Gladiator
5. Universial Soldier: The Return
6. The Faculty (May have been 1999)

Thats all I can think of for now. Most are because I like their story lines, others becuase of the action or I just like the characters.

Well, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was a 2001 release...and actually it was the movie bumped off by The Beautiful Mind (which happened to be the 71st movie I saw from the year).

Fight Club was 1999, a very good movie but the ending was stupid, it didn't set itself up as well as something like Sixth Sense in actually being seen only by him.  Still, it has some good concepts.

Seven was made in 1995...it seems you have a thing for Brad Pitt...I do too Wink.  Anyway, me being a fan of Patterson novels which are of a similar style I thought it was very captivating.  Good job done by Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman as well.

Gladiator was 2000 (won the award for it)...It was good...Crowe's fourth best movie though behind Beautiful Mind, LA Confidential, and The Insider.  Didn't really shed its action base to become a top movie.

Universial Soldier: The Return was 99 and The Faculty was 98...didn't see either of them.

Dude... I dunno about this topic, but still...

I LOVED Momento... Suprise ending, awesome storyline...

Lord of the Rings OWNED!

Spiderman was pretty damn cool

I liked Fight Club just for it's ending, although the rest of the movie wasn't that great...

I know these are before 2001 but I like "The Game" with Mechael Douglas and The Matrix...

Well, Spiderman was this year so I'll watch it probably towards the end of the year (I watch only DVDs with very few exceptions)...I guess you'll have to see what I think of it in a year when I post the list for 2002.

As for the Matrix...I think it should have been nominated for Best Picture...I mean Cedar House Rules just didn't belong.  I agree with American Beauty winning though, it was the best film of 1999.

Well, I know the years of release on all of them thanks to IMDB...as for the awards...I just happen to know that A Beautiful Mind won it this year, Gladiator before that, American Beauty before that, Titanic before that.  Just attach years to a few and the rest fall into place.  I think Braveheart won the year before Titanic, maybe Forrest Gump before that but it starts to get sketchy that far back...when in doubt check the academy award's web site.

Jeb, good selection, but the year is 2000 on that one, still worth mentioning here I suppose.

SK, like I said it gets sketchy prior to Titanic.

i agree with most of bondo's selections, especially gosford park. Lord of the Rings owned, as did Harry Potter. Waking Life and Royal Tenenbaums must also be mentioned, for those are my two favorite movies of all time. Other good selections that Bondo neglected to mention are iris and in the bedroom. i was pissed when beautiful mind won all of the awards that it did, i thought that it was very overrated and that the ending was poorly done. lord of the rings definetely should have won best picture, waking life should have won best animation at the very least since it didnt even get NOMINATED for a thing. another 2001 movie that pwned on all your asses but you probably didnt see was Shadow of the Vampire with john malkovich. anyway, the academy are a bunch of good-for-nothing geezers with shit for brains, and good movie season 2002 is just beginning now, so i am ready to get in line and see some more excellent films.

As a fan of the novels I didn't like Harry Potter as well as I could have because of all the stuff that was missing.  I mean the movie takes away tons of character development and it really loses that bit that makes it better than just good.  Still, it would make my top 20 as it had just gotten bumped off near the end.

Iris is another that just barely missed the top 15.  I actually didn't like In The Bedroom at all, it really disappointed me after all the praise it got, it would be questionable if it would make my top 30.

As for Waking Life winning best animated...maybe the fact that it was not completely animated but rather animation on top of live action kept it from being considered...besides, I think they usually just ignore indie films of the like...they only take the big hype films, some of which deserve it...most which don't.

Never saw Shadow of the Vampire...it is a 2000 film as well.
