Scott and GameRanger II

Okay all, just somthings that I would like to bring to your attention regarding Scott and GameRanger. Now, I know that there are a lot of you out there who don't like Scott, however try and think of all the things that he has to do for us to make us able to play games here on GameRanger, He has to buy the servers, Which now I think are currently a Dual 800 G4, and a 500 iMac. He has to spend hours and hours making updates, Patches for the games to work, etc. Keep in mind that he does this all for free! This means that he has to take his money that he earns and spend it on us, to keep GameRanger up, thats just spending money on Rich people that you don't even know! We should feel lucky that we have him instead of someone else who would make us pay for this service. Personaly, I think that he has a right to be a little mean to people and strict with Bans etc.  I mean really, if you were the one who works really hard and spends your money to give people a major service, and then have people like Zak ( just an example ), to come up to you and tell you to "Go Fuck your mother through her ass", How would that make you feel? Basically, I feel that sence he's giving up his time and money to give rich people that he doesn't even know a service, then if they're mean to him, then he should give them a ban. Please, tell me what you think, however, I want acurate opinions using facts, not just a thread bashing Scott.

Typhy, last time I checked there are ads on GR, and seeing as it is used by quite a few people, that is some decent money from game publishers to show off their game.  Maybe it doesn't cover his costs, but he certainly isn't making no money on GR.

While I think Evill's efforts do rate him some slack in things, I don't think it's all as you say.

First, he does get some money from GR.  He may not break even yet, but he does make some money from the click through purchases (and I even bought RTCW and UT through his click-throughs so he'll get some cash from them).  He's not doing this just to be nice, he is in it for a business as well...  

Second, lots of people give time, money and effort to the mac gaming community.... and do it without being rude.  I donate servers and bandwidth (not much and not a big deal at all) with no banners... and not being rude.. and look at what Mauti does with all the conversions and the Battle League (let's not forget Gravedigger, Coco, Elandrion, and all the others).  They are some of the nicest guys around.  Look at the guys from MaG...  nobody is ever rude over there.  They put forth servers and the app just like Scott does, but with no banners...  They just do it as a hoby, not as a business, so it's not as polished (the guy that started MaG did it as a project to help get him in a good college).   The list goes on...

My point being is that if he is doing it out of the goodness of his heart, he doesn't have to be the occasional dick about it.  And I'm not talking about banning someone for telling him to fuck his mother up the ass.... I'm talking about when he's just been plain old rude or a jerk.  There are things he could do to make GR better if he listened to the user base (ie, put updates on the web site... announce scheduled down times... maybe even an explaination for those long down times (you know, when it was down for two weeks, and when it came up it was like nothing ever happened.. no notice, no apology, no nothing).  Basically, if he was doing this out of the goodness of his heart, he would care about the users a bit more... wanting to improve.

Hell, he got angry at me for asking about OS X support 10 months after it was announced.... now, he probably hears that question 100 times a day, but if he botherd to update the news on the web site, then maybe it would solve his problem and he wouldn't get pissy at me the first time I've ever asked.

Not really a buisness Grifter, considering that it loses him money, yes, he gets money for the adds, and also, some companys will pay him a little money to make their games playable on gameranger. Overall though, he loses money, And I can't defend Scott on everything, somtimes he's a little odd, Once you get to know him though, he's real cool.

Typhy, most businesses lose money for the first few years. ?It's part of the business model. ?Look at Amazon.com... that isn't a business? ?The only businesses that make money in the first six months (as a rule of thumb) are bars.

The reason I say business is because he's trying to make it one.  He works hard at polishing it so that the game companies will pay him like they do now... I'm sure he wants this to be a money making business in the future.  Everyone else I mentioned (Mauti, Greybeard, Gravedigger, etc) are all doing it just out of a love for Mac's and gaming... no idea of ever making money off it.

Yeah, must have stunk to pre-date the spell checker, I know I certainly wouldn't have made it through English class without it.  Either way you were probably graduating college around the time I was starting real school (Junior High).  Can't really remember when I started having spell checking.

For my high school graduation, one of the presents I got was a typewritter that had spell check on it...  It would beep at me every time I spelled a word wrong.  It was a Smith and Corona Correct Writer.  It still sucked though compared to the computers.  When I was in college, the Mac 2's were out, and I eventually picked up the ColorClassic for myself.  But I finished off my English classes as a freshman, and didn't have the computers to help me with spell checking at that time.  

And the spell check dictionaries still sucked for Chemistry and Physics (my major and one of my minors as an undergrad).  With spell check now, it's no wonder that so many people younger then me can't spell worth a damn... they never really learned how.

opinion papers on books  are a different matter, those are easy
