« on: September 02, 2002, 11:02:26 am »

here is the situation.
about a month ago i got a email with a strange headline, and it said it was from damn (i'm not in 9.2 tonight but i'll have the exact email when i reboot tomorrow morning). Anyhow this Email i got from damn had a attachment which was a .exe file. The content on the email was nothing that had anything to do with damn. I remember thinking that i got some sort of PC virus, like melisa or one of those (which doesn't effect macs). A while later i think it was  or Rebel that said he got a email from me with the same attachment. Strangly i never sent that email, nor do i know his  email addresses. I never really thought that hard about it. But Rebs did acuse me of sending him a virus  Angry . Today i got a instant message from pyrex saying that he got a Email with a attachment virus. The Sender of this Virus, was no other than Ejo. Dispite his bad rep for being Teh DEVIL, he wouldn't send a friend a virus.
I'll have to check from pyrex, but i got the email (from damn) in the email adress that i use on the forums. I just thought i'd bring this up, because it seems to Lead back to DAMN.
I know my computer isn't infected because Virex ran scans sucessfully 2 times in the past 24 hours.
I really doubt that i could have sent rebs that email for 2 reasons, 1 i don't know his email adress, and 2 the way i have Outlook set up i must manuely send the email (not automatic checking and sending).

I'd think it has something to do with the mail server here, or a spider that has been combing the site for email adresses and sending out infected emails to people with a fake return email. Just a thought.
Ejo said i should bring this up, even though no harm has been done to my computer (since it apears to be a pc virus)

Yeah, this is BS. A few days ago Pyrex said he received an email from "electronicjo" and attached was a PC virus. I asked him for the exact e-mail address but his virus detection software deleted it.

It's good to keep an eye out for this shit, since *DAMN forum users seem be the only ones affected.

*sigh* noobs

Situation:
You heard that there is a new worm/virus threat that goes by any of the following names:

W32.Klez.A@mm
W32.Klez.E@mm
W32.Klez.H@mm
W32.Klez.gen@mm
W32.Poverty.A@mm

You wonder if there is any hazard of this worm/virus infecting your Macintosh.

Solution:
This is a Windows-specific worm/virus and cannot infect a Macintosh.  Since this is a worm/virus that can be email based, a Macintosh user could pass the worm/virus on through an infected email, by forwarding it to a  Windows user.

W32.Klez is a mass-mailing email worm which exploits a vulnerability in Windows versions of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. The Macintosh versions of Microsoft Outlook Express do not have this vulnerability.

If you receive a Klez infected email, delete the email and do not forward it to anyone. If you open this email or choose not to delete it, nothing will happen. It is best to delete the email, because there is no reason to keep it. The only way you can infect a PC with Klez, is by forwarding a Klez-infected email to a person using a PC. The Klez worm/virus will not do anything on your Macintosh because it will only work on a PC using a Microsoft Windows operating system.

NOTE: If someone with a PC is infected with Klez and has your email address on their computer, Klez can grab your email address and use it as the sender when it emails the virus to the rest of the collected addresses. This is called spoofing, and makes it appear as if you have the virus when you really do not.

It could be a Trojan Backdoor server. If you leave it on your computer, you are completely vulnerable to an attack. The person who put it on your computer would have complete control over it. The server fucks up all your port settings and what not. I don't know if it works on mac or not, but if you can recall the name of the file and file size, I might be able to tell what it was.

Yeah, Viper is right...and no Bronto, it isnt a Trojan backdoor virus...those usually piggyback in on .exe files.

Norton Anti-Virus eliminates the threat coming from these viruses, so if you have a PC, get the latest update of virus definitions.

If you suspect you have a virus that actually infects your comp, I would do everything in X until you get it resolved. There are a few OS 9 virii, although every Mac user I know has never had to deal with one. There are no known X virii, so I would feel safe working in X for now. Luckily there aren't enough of us using Macs for virii writers to care.

While Macs have virii few and far between, there are remote keyloggers in both the PC and Mac side.
