I would say no because of its very high latency, but i have never used it before.

Coassak, if he waits for a couple months, I'll be able to tell you... if not, and he goes ahead, tell me!

I'm having the two way sat connection installed at the farmhouse.  It's only 144kbs / 144kbs.  That should be good enough to play but not host games with... but you never know.  Going up and back to the satellite isn't the only part to slow things down... it depends on the backbone and network traffic after that....  plus, I haven't heard how weather effects the communications (like it does with satellite TV).

But, out in the country, it's one of only two options... the other being 56k....

Actually, except for the install, the two way sat isn't that expensive.  Only about $50/month (which is cheaper then what I pay now).  The install is a bitch, because the FCC wont let you do a self install (not with two way communications... have to be liscensed).  So the install and equiptment will cost me a good chunk of change... but the overall service isn't priced that bad... not when you only have two options.

As for my riches... it's just the difference between being a kid and being a working adult is all.  Well.. that and a good bit of education don't hurt =d.  The number one reason to stay in college.... $$$$

I've heard you get horrible pings off satellite, just from the time it takes for the signal to travel. I found this on a satellite service provider's page:

latency can be an issue with satellite transport. If your application is particularly sensitive to latency, satellite may not work for you. Applications known to have latency issues include interactive gaming, VoIP, and the heavy use of shared-folder or database applications that do not employ local echo.

i think that pretty much sums it up

And exactly how much were you drinking when you wrote this??  I'll leave the 'straight line' piece alone...  too easy in so many ways...  but as for the 'hundrd thousand miles' part.... how high up do you think they are?  The geosynchronous plane is about 35,800 km (22,300 miles) above the Earth... about a 10th of the way to the Moon.  Add a little more for the fact that the ones in question are centered over Texas... and call it 23,500 miles.  so not even 50,000 miles round trip.

Doing a little simple math here.... speed of light being about 186,000 miles per second...  you are talking like a 240 ping minimum (it takes 0.12 seconds for the signal to trave from earth to the sat, then double that to get to the server) add more for the ground station to the game server.

So, basically.... this will be just like playing from Europe to the US.... since most of those signals travel the same way, people just don't thnk about it.

Either way, I'll be setting one up in the fall... so I'll find out for sure then.

I'm pretty sure I never said I was rich... heh.

Now, if you were talking about buying a new Triumph or so, I may be able to arrange a small, low interest loan... but only for a purchase I agree to. ?HA.

I don't know what you guys consider riches... but I'm not where I would. ?My father-in-law is close... but not me. ?I just make a comfortable living is all.  Now, once I finish my PhD and start publishing... then I could hit it big... just remember to have your prof's all buy the textbook I'll write... Agile Software Development: The Facts and Fiction  Sounds like a good thesis... no?

it was before i had my morning coffee, ok?
my point is still valid, the signal travles farther than through a phoneline and is mor succeptable to interference

*makes mental note to drink coffee BEFORE posting next time*

how about the trends of digital culture?, we would be a perfect case study...

Remember the Ramadan Offensive. You know the one where the Northern Alliance took the Taliban on. Remember all the news reports. You would see these jornalists in Jalabad and Kunduz Mazari-Sharif all via sattleite. It always took around 1 sec for them to hear what the newsman said. Did you understand that?

Yeah, but those were doing three and four satellite hops... not one.  Plus, you are talking about squeezing more bandwidth through those pipes... etc.

It wouldn't be that bad for a single two way sat connection.
