Cel Shading

What do you think of the recent explosion of cel shading in 3D animation and games? It seems like half of the games due to come out in the next year are cel shaded, and there are even CGI TV shows and movies in the works using the technique.
Personally, I find it visually pleasing if used well. The new Zelda game on the GameCube is cel shaded. I was initially offended because I was looking forward to a nearly photorealistic Zelda game on the GC. However, the more I see of the game, the more the look of it grows on me. The hand-drawn, cartoony look given by the cel shading allows the designers to make use of cartoon physics for humorous effect without it looking terrible. It's pretty dern cool, methinks.

ahhhh, that is the tightest new technique used in the new games I noticed at E3. Dragon's Lair was the same thing and believe me, it was like watchen saturday morning cartoons except now you're in control!
Talk about a dream come true!

Do you mean that there's a new Dragon's Lair game that is cel shaded? The original was not cel shaded. Rather, it was hand-drawn. Cel shading is the technique of applying a cel shader (surprise, surprise) to a 3D rendering, making it appear (more or less) as though it was hand-drawn.
And actually, the first cel-shaded FPS game is currently in the works, and I believe it's due out in 2003. It doesn't look half bad, although it's kind of silly. However, the cel shading isn't merely a gimmick. The FPS is based on a comic book, so they used cel shading to keep it looking like the source material.

I think cel-shading is ridiculous. I said about a year ago, that it was a disturbing trend, and in that year it has only gotten worse.
I find it to be hard on the eyes as things have hard edges. Also, it takes more processing power to cel shade than do realistic graphics so it is actually extra work for worse results.
I won't hold it against games and I think Zelda will be fantastic, but I don't think cel shading is better than realism outside of things strictly based on cartoons/comics.

LoL Ultimo! It would look like Saturday Morning G.I. Joe Cartoon!
Dragon's Lair is Cell Shaded and it looks awesome! It's coming for Xbox this winter and probably PC (I didn't really pay attention if it was coming for PC, but I'm assuming it is if it's coming out for Xbox)
Cel Shading will be good on the appropriate games.
