While I do love this icon and wear it for most everything, Normaly in a place like a forum, I perfer to be more independant. Rather than just part of a clan, that's why I had the Smiley face on for so long, however, I was overtaken, this one was too cool.

Whoa...before we get too far off topic -

Is 100megs webhosting with email for $8 a month really unreasonable?

I don't think you can get that anywhere else?  No banners...great support services, and a bunch of software extras too.

How is it not worth it?  I'd sign up if I didn't already have webhosting and email....

Well but what if you don't need webspace, anti virus for mac ?or an ultra slow backupfunction. Also 8 bucks for 100megs of plain storage is very expensive. You can't run any scripts because perl, php or asp aren't supported. And there are enough free idisks out with storage between 25 - 100megs(with ads).

Steve can eat my dust - I only want my 2 mac mail addresses but unfortunaly I would have to buy a new mac account for 50 bucks to make my current accounts to email only.

Also the 10.2 OS X update for 129bucks is simple spoken an impudence.

Forget it Steve I'll activate my planetrainbowsix.com mail addresses.

8 per month = 96 per year, yes, that is unreasonable.

sadly this appears to be yet another case where apple makes a 'smart' move before consulting, or even taking input from the end user

they did that for os x and look what happened, we got a os that everyone could deal with and that satisfied a large majority of the end users.

now, if only apple would have done the same thing here...i dont mean to sound cynical, but given apple's record(along with the rest of corprate america) i think were stuck with this unless that petition has at least 1 million signatures on it. mb more

p.s.  there were 21,560 signatures as of 6:42 CST 7/21/02

I see what you mean Mauti - I had incomplete info.

Although I do think the new .mac might be right for some people, those who had a need for all its services.

But yeah...I think I'll join the petition against it...even though it doesn't really affect me that much.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I can understand Apple wanting to charge for this stuff. It costs them a lot of money for bandwidth and all that stuff. However, the timing of this really was piss-poor. They announce it just as they tell us we have to pay 130 bucks for a friggin point release of OS X. That's just recockulous. But back on the .Mac subject, I just wish they could still give out one free e-mail per user. Charge for the other stuff, but keep an e-mail. I know I take pride in having my mac.com email addy, and I think it gives good publicity.

Im not suprised at Steves actions, he's a money hungry SOB. Thats why i purchaced a PC last Christmas, my G3 BW is getting old i thought( it still runs better than my P4 1.6mhz) so that made think twice b 4 buying another PC. Apple does have very GREAT products, but man, they sure now how to screw there loyal users!

i think that the target audience for .mac is more for the professional adult crowd. ?especially isync and ical.

also, i've heard many people complaining about paying for 10.2. ?i realize that most of you haven't been buying software for a long time, but apple has been charging for point releases for a long time. ?apple never charged for it's os before os 7, but after that, 7.5, 7.6, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0, 10, have all been purchased. ?i think the biggest difference is that when they used to release a big set of stuff (like they are doing with 10.2) they used to bump the number up to .5 ?i think they are trying to hang on to the number 10 for a long time to come though.

also, i talked to some of you online last week about this. ?many of you are college students, and get apple software at a huge discount. ?about 50% off for 10.2. ?sometimes even bigger. ?for others of you, i can just say that apple has never asked me to prove that i'm a college student, or for proof that grifter's wife was a teacher, when we've gotten our discounts. ?use that knowledge as you will.

one other note, grifter was looking at setting up free macclans e-mail for the masses.  he was still working on the web front end instead of just making it pop3.  buccaneer and i will be looking at finishing his work if the demand is there.
