bah, Apple is so gay if they go through with this plan. I for one would never waste that type of money just to maintain an email address.

Broken "Free Email" Promise

With Yahoo and MSN Hotmail being free, I don't see how Mac can compete with those services. After promising that their service would never cost anything, this comes as a surprise that Mac would go back on their word. Well, when opportunity knocks, it doesn't surprise me there isn't someone ready to collect off it.

well, i'm gonna be getting the service so i don't really care that much (my dad is buying it). anyhow if you have a itools acount it only costs 50$. I do think there should be a option for free services. Or some choices for how many services you want. there is a feedback form you can fill out and send to them on the .mac site. just my 2 cents.

Good question, I don't...
You might be able to see by moving your cursor over the picture of letters (beside someones post), ignore the "mailto:...." and just check the domain they use, but I guess that would take a while

I think the complaints about .Mac pricing are off-base. If Jobs had announced a $20 charge for iCal, $20 for iSync, $40 for Virex, etc., and given the services portion away free, people would have barely registered a complaint. "Sure we'll pay for software" they would say.
Instead, Jobs has given away a solid suite of programs and asked people to pay a yearly fee to fully take advantage of the software. iCal is a great calendaring program. Even for $20 it would be a steal. Same with iSync and Virex. These are best-in-class programs, and iCal is so much better that it has no significant rival. The only software that comes to mind is Action Scheduler, and that is $50, if I remember correctly.
So, I think .Mac is eminently "worth it." In fact, it is a bargain. Broadband connections (mine, at least) is $40 a month. Cable TV is even more. Landline phones? More. My static-clogged, obsolete-when-purchased (no 3G, of course) cell phone? That much plus. Mac is more like $8 a month, and $4 for the current iTools members (everyone in the Keynote and target .mac audience, basically.) For $19 a month, a student can rent a nice iMac (see store.apple.com education-> leasing) and subscribe to .Mac services. Hardly unreasonable. (A far sight from the $300 Microsoft charges for their glorified word processor. So 10.2 costs $129 and offers no upgrade pricing? Office v.X is $200 to upgrade.)
Lastly, the so-called "hard core" Mac users always find a reason to complain during and after every keynote. Even though I have owned a Mac since 1984 and never once a PC, and I would never switch platforms in a million years, I do not put myself in that category. I do not ask Apple to make OS X run on my Mac Plus. I do not rage blindly against any new UI features Mr. Jobs and Co. want to add to the system. I like the Dock and column view. To me, OS 9 now looks cheap, like it was drawn by a toddler, and is maddening to use. They are just continuing the tradition of complaining about Apple.

Sorry, that quote is a stupid assessment of what Mac is doing. In fact, mac would be better off offering the seperate services individually instead of packaging them altogether. First off, Virex sucks my left testicle. It sure as hell isnt worth $40. Second, I don't care if he thinks iCal is the best calendar program out there. I guarantee you that you can find a similar one for free elsewhere on the web.
I dunno what Jobs is smoking but this is a very stupid act on his part. He will be lucky to get 1% of all of the registered iTools members to fall for his trap and buy his worthless .Mac "suite."

I just signed up for iTools at the beginning for this month to post a few pics up, so if they charge I wouldn't pay, nor would I really care, but hey, it is nice to have that web space for posting pics.

Apple offered a possbillity for iTools users - who dont want to pay for it - to have one e-mail adress for free. It is to be found somewhere on the Apple Site , i lost the URL, sorry dudes.
But for those who wonna use the @mac Adress for free they should look it up.
I can tell something that i remeber:
1) U need a Full ITools Account, if u have a trial one u have to chnage it into a full.
2) then u have to enable the e-mail only preferences and then u can use this for free, but without diskspace and any other service, only Mail.
