The cb ranking modules take more time than expected nevertheless I would like to start a sneak peak asap. However beside programming delays it als seems my webhost messed up with the DB upgrade to MySQL 5 so I guess the earliest possible day to upload and setup the *DBL will be monday or tuesday.

The sneak peak will be a closed private testing. Some of you, especially former *DBL admins, will be contacted as soon as it is ready. If you don't belong to this group but are still interested to participate you can apply by just leaving a post here. I'll give out a handful of test accounts.

The purpose of the sneak peak is to get some prerelease feedback and testing to avoid at least some heavy bugs. It will last a few days.

After that the public release will follow. This is also the time when I want to discuss and setup the game list and rules for the first season or event., depending if the tournament module will be ready by that time.

When will the first season or tournament start? - This depends on the sneak peak feedback and game/rule discussions. Beside that in 10 days I'm in sweden for one week. So to be realisitic it will be after the 25th march but before eastern. Although this might not be the best time as other leagues start it's the only possibility for me.

Alright going back to the cb ranking modules,

Mauti

Great news Mauti. But i do still believe there is not enough people who knows *DBL is here.

I've tried to reach people through COD4 Servers, i just don't think there is enough clans who is ready to participate.

V has just turned back and are slowly building the COD4 Team up, i don't know which games you were thinking of supporting but i mainly think COD4 would be the most successful.

Everything you describe sounds interesting, and i assume as always that you know what you are doing.
My point is we might could invite some people to look at the league before we start it, as when we get enough of teams signed up then we could start the season.

That's just my personal opinion.
I will gladly help writing in different forums to check the battle league out, but there is no guarantee that they will sign up.

a status of which clans that would be interested in participating would be nice, just to get a view over who might be interesting in battling.

If there is a few clans signing up, then V is more than ready to get some action going on again... :-)
We appreciate your hard working & the hours you have put into this, and what you have done to our community to make it even more exciting to play online games.

Hi Stripes,

spreading the word is always a good idea(as long as nobody feels spammed).

However please hold back with any postings and invitations until everything is online and running.

Beside clanbattles there are also COOP and HS(Highscore) ladders to keep you busy ;-)

Thx for your support,

Mauti

I have to say COD4 doesn't play very well on Gameranger when a US player joins a Euro host.  I find the game unplayable.  I don't know how this would work for clan battles when you have US vs Euro clans.  Whatever clan is hosting has a huge advantage.  I'm sure if a US player was hosting the Euro people would have the same issue.  When we did this with Ghr it was at least playable on most hosts the lag didn't decide the outcome of games but a game like CoD4 is different.
At least I know Stripes host sucks for US players Tongue  I've joined other CoD4 Euro hosts on Gameranger too and found it unplayable.  Its not fun when you try to shoot a player and their warping like crazy in front of you.  Its almost like trying to shoot an Agent from the Matrix movie.

You almost need to have a person with a really good connection to host a dedicated server for all clan battles.

Good news. Can't wait for the *DBL to relaunch.

There are enough people, but the question are they interested? There are already many battle leagues out there and most of them have administration in multiple languages. This ofc doesn't apply for the US, nevertheless speaking English scares most euros unless it's their first language.

This is the reason why leagues are us or euro only. A good dedi server can't solve this issue. You may have never played FPS that mostly rely on reflexes and a decent aim, but I can tell you anything higher than a ping of 50 is unplayable in a competition.

Well I don't know what *DAMN is gona do but I'm certainly not signing up for a CoD4 ladder if its US clans vs Euro clans.  Maybe have 2 ladders, one for USA and one for Euro and let clans choose which to play for, or let clans play for both.  I think a 2v2 ladder would be fun for CoD4.  There are clans on Gameranger that only have 2 or 3 people that have the game so a 2v2 ladder could be good for them.

I agree, although this probably goes too much into detail and will solely depend on team activity in said regions. For example, in Urban Terror I used to play against people from the US, simply because their ladder was not very active and they chose to play in the euro ladder rather than not to play at all.

Anyhow, one could argue that splitting the ladders will make things only unnecessarily complicated. But in fast paced FPS, unlike GhR Wink, the ping is crucial and a ping of 120+ is game breaking. Therefore splitting the servers is not an option either, because it would only come down to who has less of a ping disadvantage or gets more lucky. This ofc is assuming that the teams are evenly matched.

Seperated ladders by country are no problem at all if a game requires it. However there is no automated check that says clan X == US clan because 60% of the players are from America. Of course I can add it if it will be required.

Beside that in a later update ladders can have more requirements like a clan and or member has to play at least X cbs before they can join. Right now the only available requirements that can be set are clan roster size and manual or best of sign up resistrictions.

Back on topic: my host just contacted me and the MySQL upgrade should be done tonight. So at least tomorrow I can start uploading the sneak peak.

Bye,

Mauti

I don't think that will be necessary.
Teams who play games like COD4 should have ladders separated into different regions due to too high latency problems. Teams should only have to accept to play on servers that are located in the region that is definied by their ladder.  For example: If a US team decide to join an euro ladder, they won't be able to play on a US server in that particular ladder.

@topic: I'll be happy to sneak a peak.  Sniper

Schedule for today:

at 4pm my little brother celebrates his 13th birthday and as soon as I'm back home I start uploading the preview and adjusting everything so it runs on this server. Once everything is working I'll send out the pms and/or emails.

JESUS! My webhost totally fucked up the upgrade. Somehow they have managed to revert my PHP installation to version 4.  PHP 5 was installed since december 2007 and the *DBL, due the object orientated framework, strictly relies on version 5. As long I can only wait and drink tea.

Sorry for this disappointment. I hope they react asap on my support request.

More news as they come.
