I'm on a rant today, so I may as well jump on this one.

I hear so many people bitch that to play GhR, or RvS, they are going to have to buy a new Mac.  I hear many people bitch about the games sucking, and that's their first complaint.  

So let's take a look.  The requirements for GhR are a 450MHz and at least an ATI Radeon.  So, in other words, a computer that was available in August of 1999.  That's four years ago.

The requirements for RvS are 733MHz and at least a 32MB GeForce2 video card.  A computer that came out January of 2001.  That's about a 3 year old computer by the time the game gets here.

So if you want to keep up with the latest games, you need a computer that's less then 3 years old.  

But here's where the real bitching comes.  The people that buy iMacs but expect them to be good gaming machines.  

People, WAKE UP.  You can't honestly expect to have new, cool, state of the art (or even close to it) games run on 3 and 4 year old kit.  And before you talk about your iMac only being a year old, give it up.  It's an iMac.  They aren't high end machines.

I'm not heartless, I understand that not everyone has the money to buy a new computer, but don't bitch about the games coming out not running on them just because you can't.  

But computers become outdated, and they do it fast.  Every 18 months if you want to stay ahead of the game.  So sell that outdated pos on e-bay and order your new G-5, and then you'll be good for 2 more years.

Some of us are not willing too waste 3g's on some better frame rates ya know.

If your not willing to upgrade your computer, you shouldn't roll around in your own piss and vomit crying about how poorly games run on your computer.

Well for someone like me, it's really just a losing game of catch-up. Since I can never afford to pay what Apple charges for its high end computers (in the 1500-3000 range just for the computer), I have to wait for them to get old. By the time they are cheap enough for me to afford they are typically about 2 years old. That leaves me a year of gaming on my computer until it is outdated. But I can't afford to buy a new computer each year, I really can only feasibly afford one every 4-5 years. This means that I am getting a year of gaming out of each one. I don't hold Apple responsible for my own financial situation, I know they have to charge that much.

It's really just more of wishful thinking for me, IE "I wish my computer could play newer games". It would be nice if more people would realize that shiny new graphics?a better game. That said, if I can ever afford to buy better computers more often, I will. So anyway, I don't bitch about it, I lament it. Way different.

Typhy: Can you go 3 fucking posts without mentioning the specs on your Macs. You didn't do a damn thing to earn any of them, so going on about how spoiled you are is pretty fucking annoying. Besides, my rig pwns anything you have.

Bucc: iMacs aren't bad gaming machines for the first two years of their life, if not more. An 800 or 700 MHz G4 with a GeForce2 should still play any game out right now. Hell, I just retired my Cube from active gaming and I was able to play everything save AA. And that's on a 450 MHz G4 with a Rage 128. But regardless, I agree with your rant. If you really want to game well on your machine for a while, get a tower and then upgrade the video card a few years in. It's amazing how much your gaming experience can be improved with more RAM and a better video card.

Mainman: Some of us buy these machines for many other things. Getting a kickass gaming box is just a nice side effect.

Smokie, iMacs are great computers, for what they are meant for, which isn't gaming.  They have their niche and they fit great.
