from the New York Times, Thursday edition:

A poll published on Wednesday indicated Mr. Mondale had the support of 47 percent of voters against 39 percent for Mr. Coleman.

The poll, in Wednesday's Minneapolis Star Tribune, suggested that Mr. Mondale has 98 percent name recognition and a slightly larger lead over Mr. Coleman than the six percentage points Mr. Wellstone posted two weeks ago. The percentage of undecided voters has also grown to 11 percent from 7 percent. The newspaper said the poll was based on 639 interviews on one night and had a margin of error no greater than four percentage points.

wow talk about ownerization? its amazing that Walter Mondale can waltz into this race 2 weeks before the election and lead by a greater margin than the incumbent did. Well, more power to him I guess? he is a living legend.

It is kinda funny how much press people get for losing famous elections, isn't it?

Maybe he'll be the Dem nominee in 2004. . .

97 % of incombents are re-elected, I dont care if he got his ass handed to him on a golden pladder hes gonna win this election with 2 weeks running experience. THey could just not do anything let Wellstone win and then appoint someone. Like I forget who but that guys widow became the senator.

Zaitsev,

Since Mondale isn't the incombent, why throw in that stat of 97%?  That doesn't make sense to me.

He also has much more then 2 weeks of running experience.  He'd have to if he ran for president.  He's just only been on that ballot for 2 weeks is what you must be trying to say.

They aren't supposed to just "appoint someone".  Not like you are thinking.  There are laws as to how things like this happen.  That "Widow" you talk about wasn't just appointed overnight.  Oh, and the Senate doesn't have to accept whoever was appointed (or even elected).  The senate can, and has censured people (Kicked them out and forced a new election).  This has happened in the Federal Senate and just recently in our State Senate here in Michigan (a booze hound got busted for DUI for the 6th time of so, so the other senators voted him out on his ass).

Nope Cossack because this time, unlike Mizzou, the deceased has been replaced by a candidate on the ballot. In Mizzou, they left Mel Carnahan's name on the ballot and he won by a sympathy vote.

Zaitsev: I thought I heard something about Minnesota law saying that a deceased candidate in an election must be replaced within 4 business days of his death or his name would be removed from the ballot with no replacement.

I'm Ace, he is Assassin. If you have problems telling us apart, just remember this:

Ace - Goes to an insanely awesome school called USC
Assassin - Takes it up the bumhole in Westwood at a school called FUCLA.

Don't ever mistake me for a Bruin again. :P

Also, didn't McGovern get pounded worse than Mondale? If I remember correctly, he only won Massachusetts.

I'll have to look up how many electoral votes each got.  I'm pretty sure that Mondale only got like 3, but it was a long time ago.

1984 Election:
Reagan (R): 525                                        Mondale (D): 13 (Minnesota, D.C.)

1972 Election:
Nixon (R): 520                                         McGovern (D): 17 (Massachusetts, D.C.)

Close, but the 1984 election takes the cake.

Thanks Assassin.  It was 13, not 3.  still, 525 to 13.  That was only 13 more votes then I got, and I didn't even run.
