does anyone know what the easiest and cheapest way is to network a Dell Latitude (laptop) and a G4 tower? i wanted to see if i could play some multiplay at home with friends, and i noticed both have Ethernet plugs, so i strung a Ethernet cable between them, but don't know what to do then...
any suggestions??

Change the tc/pi connection to lan or whatever then whatever game you are playing one of you host and the other just goes to multiplayer, lan, and joins your game.

Typhy, you're a moron.
Assuming you have only 2 computers. You have to buy a cross connect cable or you can make one yourself out of standard cat5 but that can be kind of tricky if you have never done it before. A regular straight through, which you have connected, won't connect two computer's directly to each other... you'd have to have a router for that.

Vips right. Also, you could use a hub to two ethernets... That would work too...

A hub is the same thing as a router... they're both multi port repeaters. And ethernet is not a cable, it's a standard, you meant cat5 cables
Plus router's and hubs can be expensive, he want's something cheap, which would be a cross connect cable.

ok, i found a really good site and found the stuff out. I have a hub, and am going to try again tonight with it, but the problem is, i can't play RS because the PC version i got doesn't install right (usual....) so i'll mainly just use it for file sharing untill i get the game sorted out. Anyways, thanks alot for the tips

in that case, for file sharing they may work right out of the box, i'm kinda behind on the times on networking things such as this.
A couple years ago i used a lil prog on the PC called "PC-Maclan". Simply installed it and all appletalk networks show up right in the network neighborhood browser, and the PC shows up in the chooser on your mac.
after you install it just gott set everything up like you normally would for a network.

Don't simplify for me. I know all the shit. They work at different levels. Also, routers cost over a hundred more in most cases, then a hub. I'm assuming its temporary... He wouldn't wanna play against himself at his home...
Also, Baz, make sure the PC's RS has the update for PC.

A hub is not the same as a router. (Someone with more knowledge than I, please correct me if my facts are wrong.) A hub merely broadcasts all packets it recieves to all computers hooked up to it. A router (AKA switch) is more intelligent, and routes the packets it recieves only to the computers that want to recieve them. For small networks, there's little functional difference. For networks with lots of packets flying around, though, a router is far more efficient.

Yes Loth, a Hub will broadcast it's inmformation to all computers on the network, which would be a huige problem... if the network weren't just two computers... I mean, if you are temporarily hooking two computers together (for a few hours one day) would you rather pay 200 bucks for a router, or like 10 bucks for a hub.
Anyway, a router is slower then a switch by the way... So a switch might be just a good..

Yes, but you'd want a router not a real switch.

I got the Cisco CCNA #640-507 Certification (ISBN 0-7357-0971-8)...
but I don't think Baz has the needs for a Cisco router...

Review sheet? OMG you guys get hw over there? The teacher pretty much tells us "read the chapter and take the test"... Hahaha. Work in Cisco... Inconcievable..
Why is a router necessary though? I mean, can you give me a good reason? I got reasons why it wouldn't be...

So to answer your original question Baz... The Cisco Networking whores... and the graduates... Agree that a switch some CAT 5 cable would be the best temporary networking thingy mabobber.... Hub would be ok, but laggy... Router would be awesome, but expensive...

Actually a $10-$15 premade cross connect cable is cheaper for connecting two computers
