Why would you dump $3299 (US) on a product that will likely be the last update before Intel? I don't see the logic unless you need extreme power for Legacy Apps. As a side note, games announced by Aspyr to be in x86 development [sounds funny to say]:

-Doom 3
-The Sims 2
-Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
-Jedi Academy

This is all basically to GS's comment that he's upgrading so also: GhR will run in Rosetta, and likely so will RvS with the current expected specifications. I don't know what will be done with AA, but honestly the way they have hesitated on 2.5 I just don't know what to think there.

Besides games, what do you do with your computer GS?

To civic's Xbench post; The lower the score the better? I would rather they had run CineBench. Anyway, I guess these are decent upgrades, however I'm a bit disappointed that the couldn't get a bit more clock speed out of these chips since they were announced by IBM mid this year.

The Powerbooks were much more disappointing, basically being a RAM and Resolution update. I guess they can justify doing a January update after such a minor bump. I guess the G4 has reached its end in the Powerbook line, and all I can do is smirk. Good bye to bad FSBs... in Jan/Feb... hopefully.... please...

Well, games are on the bottem-end of what I use my mac for.  Mainly, I use it for Photoshop, video editing, working on my veteran's tributes websites, converting VHS tapes to DVD, burning music CD's, spec'ing and ordering vehicles for the dealership, and...

well, PORN!  hehehe

No, the higher the better. And they couldn't get more out of these processors, it's the most they could get out of them already, as they did with the former version (to 2.7Ghz, overclocked). Maybe they can do it again and overclock the top-modell to a Quad-Core 2.7Ghz... but that's very unlikely. This is probably the last PowerMac revision before the Intel-Macs. Same goes for the PowerBooks.

And most games will probably run with Rosetta... and all more recent ones, or games which were successful in case of sales and are worth it, will get updates. The ones they already announced that they are updating for x86 are easy because they were completely, or at least partly, developed in Xcode.

@ GhostSniper: this is probably for you ;-): https://abs.apple.com/transition/index.html

Btw one thing I missed is that the PowerMac has 4 PCI-Express slots and therefore could support up to 4!!!! NVidia 7800 graphic cards = 8 23' Apple Screens or 2 quadros = 4 30' screens,... and the CoreVideo as well as CoreImage are really taking off = muahahaha this thought makes me insane!

I could have my 2 30' for working, while I have another 30' in the living room and another 30' in the kitchen and I could run movies/DVDs on 2 of those while I work on my other 2 screens. Well I guess another PowerMac would come me cheaper, jut the imagination drives me insane. ;-)

You should keep in mind that the dual-cores is only one processor, if I am right?

One processor with two cores, yes, dual-core. Comparable to dual single-cores (former modells), but the new ones have several other aspects which make them signifcantly faster in certain areas. And then there's the new quad-core... or dual dual-core... I call it fondly "monster". *drool*

According to Apple's "Hardware > Power Mac G5 > PCI Express" page, you can have a max of two Quadros or 7800s, or four 6600s.  But then on the "Graphics" page, the table shows that both the 7800 and 6600 take up one PCIe slot, while the Quadro takes two.  Hrmm...

Each time i visit the Apple store to "dream buy" my Duel Core Duel Processor G5, i see only two options for graphics cards:

• Quadro  FX 4500
or
• GeForce 6600

... which is anoying because i would select the GeForce 7800 GT (depending on the price)
i thought this was a bug before.. but it dosn't seem to have changed at all!

"The Apple guy I spoke to at sales said the new 7800 GT card will be a $500.00 option when available. He couldn't say when though." There seem to be availability issues with this card.

And btw, iTunes 6.0.1 got realeased via Software Update.

$500 = about £280 heh... ouch.

All of which leads me to think there is no way i can afford to upgrade, so its going to be a case of investing in a new sleeping bag for all the nights spent on the couch while this thing chugs its way through the renders.

And btw... the "$500" for the 7800GT is not an official BTO price.

Hmmm Ive just been looking at RAM and what the cost is on the apple store... we all know that it costs more from apple but did you know by just how much? well there are seriouse RAMifications (hahah im sorry i couldn't resist) by getting it from apple... for instance:

Crucial.co.uk are selling 2GB packs (thats 2x 1GB module) of DDR2 PC2-4200 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC  ram... for only £136.99 ex. VAT

Thats about $242 dollars for an additional 2GB of DDR2 RAM... Good deal!

:MoD:Saberian will insist that Apple's Ram is "Apple Certified" but does it really matter if you can get the same RAM for a serious cut in price?

hehe cos sab ain't biased Wink True, very true, but at the same time these guys often guarentee 100% compatability etc and money back if your not satified... and more than often the actual ram is exactly the same as what apple offers!

I think there might be some other things i there as well - you have to re-register your other macs that you want to be able to play tunes you bought from the itunes store.. which suggests there are modifications to the  DRM stuff etc... but thats a shot in the dark. it all runs fine though!
