Video after all?
October 11, 2005 - In recent weeks Think Secret has been deluged with conflicting information from sources regarding Apple's September 7 media event, the cancelled Apple Expo keynote, and tomorrow October 12 event. While reliable evidence has corroborated reports of the development of a video iPod, information has pointed to a release date later than October. Recent notes suggest otherwise, however, and tomorrow may in fact see the release of a video iPod, while Mac updates may not be delivered until next week.

Think Secret initially reported that the iPod update arriving tomorrow--all but confirmed in Apple's conference call this afternoon discussing its fourth quarter earnings--would sport a smaller enclosure in capacities up to 80GB. Those upgrades may be planned for a future iPod, however, as sources are pointing to 30GB and 60GB iPods debuting tomorrow, likely with some sort of video playback ability. Think Secret sources still expect pricing to remain at $299 and $399, with each model offered in two colors.

Should video playback be incorporated into tomorrows iPod, it may not be with an emphasis on commercial movies. Rumors have swirled for months concerning Apple's sale of music videos at the iTunes Music Store, and those plus video podcasts and television broadcasting appear better positioned at this point for a video iPod than feature length films. Apple will be hosting a media event at the BBC's headquarters in London tomorrow to coincide with the media event in California, suggesting a tie-in with that broadcasting entity.

Apple also appears to be working on a tool that would allow consumers to easily import movies onto their computer, although its functionality might not extend to copyrighted works initially. Think Secret reported Sunday that Apple executives had previously stressed the importance of such a tool in order for a video iPod to really take off.

Apple to announce iPod with video playback, media partnerships later today

October 12, 2005 - Hours prior to Apple's October 12, sources have clarified to Think Secret recent confusion surrounding Apple's iPod announcement today. In brief: the iPod will be feature video playback capabilities but it is not the video iPod and Apple may not bill it as such. Additionally, Apple will announce a content partnership with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) and possibly other broadcasting companies that will make content available for download to Apple's device, as noted yesterday.

The new iPod will look nearly identical to current models but will feature a 2.46-inch display with a 320x240 resolution, about half an inch larger than the current iPod. The video playback capability, which sources say is in fact available in current models but is disabled, will be geared towards watching broadcast content, video podcasts, and other shorter videos, but Apple will not be offering movies to purchase at this time. Instead, the company is hoping to roll out a movie store later in 2006 when the "real" video iPod, which will sport a larger widescreen display wrapped in a new casing, will debut.

Think Secret has also not been able to confirm with 100 percent certainty the capacity of the new iPods, which will be either 30GB and 60GB or 40GB and 80GB, although it seems more likely now that the latter configurations, as originally reported, will be delivered. Pricing will remain at $299 and $399 with two colors at each price point.

In related news, in an effort not to detract from today's iPod announcement -- iPod revenue now accounts for a third of Apple's total revenue -- Apple is expected to deliver the rumored upgrades to its Macs either later this week or early next, sources said.

And the Apple Stores just went down.
London: About 350 invited guests have passed about 20 security people and are waiting in a hall with black and white curtains. Hostesses are bringing the guests and journalists to their seats...

Pascal Cagni, european "boss" of Apple, enters the stage and welcomes the audience. He sums up all big announcements from this year so far... iPod nano, iTunes 5, etc.

The song "Video killed the Radio Star" is playing. Maybe another hint for new iPods? Wink

Steve Jobs enters the stage.
He's going to announce a new iMac today.
The new iMac is tighter and has a built-in iSight. He's showing it.

FrontRow has a minimalistic interface that easily lets you control everything about iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and watching DVDs.

It comes with every new iMac.

It has 6 buttons, a similar one from Microsoft for their "Mediacenter" has 40.

The new iMac has a new graphics card, a faster processor, bigger HD, built-in iSight, FrontRow. It costs as much as the former 17" iMac G5 and it starts shipping today.

$1299 for the 17" modell with 1,5GHz, $1799 for the 20" with 2,1GHz.

The new iPod has a wider screen and and video. The main feature is still going to be the music.

2,5" display, 16:9, 320x240 pixel resolution and it supports MPEG 4 & H.264. Also, it supports 260.000 colours and you can connect it to a TV.

30GB - $299 and 60GB for $399.

They'll both be also avaiable in black and start shipping next week. They're 31% thinner than the former modells.

Steve Jobs shows a new TV ad.

It is the iPod that was shown in the pictures posted earlier.

He's showing a U2 video on the iPod ("Watch Music") and there'll be a new ad campaign.

Steve Jobs shows iTunes 6!

You can buy videos with it, Apple is offering 2.000 videos, each for $1.99.

The videos have a similar pretoection as the musicfiles from the Music Store. You can't burn them, but you can play them on 5 different computers and on as many iPods as you want.

The protection is called "Fairplay" and a movie is about 20MB big. Steve Jobs is showing how it works...

iTunes 6 will be available today. You'll also be able to buy TV shows via the iTMS.

Yes, Shade, and I just summed up the changes. Wink

"ONE MORE THING!"

Apple cooperates with ABC, you can buy 5 tv shows. One of them is Desperate Housewives and you'll be able to download each new episode one day after its public airing for each $1.99. The show "Lost" is also by ABC. Wink

w0000t! Seems like this is only for the USA iTMS. Grin

iTunes 6 requires QT 7.0.3 which is not available yet. Both should be downloadable right after the keynote.

The new iMacs have ATi X600 Pro or XT graphics cards... means they have PCI-Express. Therefore, you can expect PCI-Express in any new version of PowerMacs, if there will be a new one. Wink

The new iMacs look kewl - I love the little things they put in it like:

Quote
Great Ambience

Even when it’s sleeping, iMac thinks about what’s best for you. In low-light environments, a sensor detects the room’s ambient light and adjusts the sleep light to match — so you and your iMac G5 can both catch some Zs.

And they changed the orientation of the ports in the back so they aren't stacked anymore.
