I ttie to convert my Island Thunder soundfiles into AIFF format improve my framerate, but when I tested the game I couldn't hear my Socom firing.  I reinstalled IT and would like to know if anyone has converted the songfiles properly, and which audio conversion app you used.  Thank you,

Forget what I have written before!

Well sounds are hearable. SOCOM is louder than the silent snipergun but I also experienced in a very private conversion that the sounds are extremely silent until I used the settings below.

The aif sound conversion settings I use:

Fileformat: AIFF
Encoding: PCM
Samplingrate: 22050
Channels: No change
Bit depth: 16bit

Bye,

You can also get the .aif sounds off of Tim Leary's site. He has them near the bottom, Mp2Sounds is the filename I think

I used a nice little app called SoundConverter. You can get it from VersionTracker.com. It's a tiny OS X program which allows drag-and-drop converting of lots of sound files at once. I just dragged the IT sounds onto it (don't drag the effects.xml file as well, it'll choke the program and abort the conversion) set to convert to AIFF with the default settings for the program. A few moments later, it was done, and the sounds worked fine.
