I'm not refering to the design, which is very cool, but the optimization. These maps run abysmally on my machine where other much larger and more detailed maps run quite well.

Is there any chance there is some file (or files) that didn't get optimized/converted when porting this mod to the Mac? I'm hoping so, because as of right now this very cool map is unplayable for me.

Damn it, haven't tried it on my iMac yet. On my powerbook it runs very well. Have you tested it with Island Thunder activated, because in general if a map tries to find the right textures the fps goes down. So every white missing texture spot causes slowdowns. About the optimizations, there is nothing else I can do.

Bye,

Yup, I have IT running. The only screwy texture I noticed in the map was on a couple of the enemy helmets. That's an excellent thought about the .env file, I'll give it a go. If I spot anything else I'll drop a line. Thanks!

Two additional notes that might help:

I changed the fog but that helped only marginally. On the "dawn" version of the map my frame rate drops rapidly when I am facing the front of the mosque. Once the front of the mosque is at my back or othherwise off screen everything is fine.

I played the "day" version of the map twice in a row (also with altered fog). The first time it was playable but the second time it ran at only 1 or 2 fps when I was facing the enemy troops. I've no idea why performance should vary so widely between one game and the next (I was playing the "Rambo" game type).

I only have a 700 MhZ G4 and I absolutly love that map.  Yes, when your facing the Mosque the frames will drop because there is a lot more detail and textures over there.  But it's still playable for me.

I run GR on an 800mhz iMac with 512MB RAM. All of the standard maps, including DS and IT, run smooth as silk. It is the inconsistency of performance between these other maps (both official and mods) and the Mosque map that leads me to question whether there isn't something off in the texture files.

... currently thinking its a pretty awsome map - really demands a different stle of play and is a great variation from a lot of the maps about. like shade said a bit of a dip at the actual mosque but nothing to make me not want to play it more!

Rgr that, I am running a dual 867 and I pull normally 40-60fps off that map.  Granted I dont have the Nvidia G-force 2 32card that you have but I can tell you my comp wouldnt run much faster.  Not sure what you are doing but just make sure when you run the mod to only have DS and IT on it.  If you run the DAMN Mappacks with it as well it will generate serious amounts of lagg.  Food for thought.

Try setting human shadows to a lower setting, this is wot eats the most fps on the mac GhR engine
