« on: February 17, 2003, 03:27:25 am »

I was thinking about creating a tactics site for GhR players, with tutorials and tips & tricks for all skill levels. The problem with this is, I'm good at one thing: sniping. I can't give anybody any useful advice on any other topic. So, I bring this idea before the community to ask anybody who's interested to write a tutorial, note down a tip, etc. There are some people who I'm particularly interested in hearing from, like assaulting tutorials by Ace and Jeb (well, more of a "charge in like a psychopath and somehow don't die" tutorial in Jeb's case), but anyone who's good at something, speak up. : ) Post your tips here, or host them on the web and link to them, or whatever. The more information that gets around, the better everyone will be, and the more fun playing will be.

You forgot me loth! What I am good at is GLs and somehow getting around into the enemies backside. In Urban maps your best freind is you grenade launcher.  With all of the narrow streets and such, it is your best GHR kit. The trick is using them correctly, you have to develope a feel for the arch. Dont try to land it right on top of their head, go for the wall above them. You are essentialy a fast, agile, small artillery peice.
Here is a tip for Tank. You know how people consider that map one sided and biased. You have the people spawining in that open desert. For the usual "disinfranchised team", you should make a large push to the river forde.
If you want to be good at assaulting like Ace, Jeb, or I, you should push as hard as fast as you can to get a good forward position at the start of the game. Encircle them. For instance in Embassy, if you start out on offense you should encircle them as fast as possible. Keep in mind, when you are running you are in a vulnerable position. Stop every now and then when you are on the advance, scan the area, and destroy any threat visible.

I cant give away all secrets (especially for Vilnus). Figure out some for yourself. Also, when you think enemies are near, or you are walking to an enemy right behind the corner, nade and walk.

The marines are so good they took a jeep into some Iraq village trying to get ambushed, they refueled 6 times and did everything they could to get ambushed. and didn't!
Then the same people take in a army jeep and try not to get ambushed and they do. but the marines kill them all and go home.

I'll give you a hand Loth. Find me on GR so we can talk about it.

What I am good at is... somehow getting around into the enemies backside.

The |MP|s and some (uNts (the NetFone group, basically) are moving ahead with this idea. If anyone has tips or tricks or tactics that you want to share, please let us know. The more information that is available, the higher the average level of GhR skill will be, and the more fun playing will be. So contribute. : )

It's easy to see that NetPhone is a big advantage in team play.

For us non-NetPhone types in the pickup games, communication in GhR seems to be sketchy at best.  I hear a lot of "<user> sensor down at my location" or "<user>requesting backup". Then I have to locate that person to see where the sensor is or where backup is needed.  It might be better to say "sensor placed in garage" or "need backup south east". ("Sensor down at location" implies that the sensor is no longer working).

"Enemy on map" seems to work well as long as the enemy is visible to someone on your team or a sensor.  But how do you point out that there is an enemy that you can't see like "Enemy somewhere on my left killing our spawn"?

How about a universal location convention?  If the map were divided into 4 parts (letters) across the top and 4 parts (numbers) down the sides, locations could be called out like "sensor placed at B4" or "enemy at C3". Perhaps such a grid already exists but I'm too much of a noob to figure it out.

Actually, there is a set of map graphics with grids overlaid. The grids are divided into a coordinate system with numbers and letters, and (this is the best part, IMO) the grid squares are 25 meters on a side in all maps. I got it from a clanmate, and there's no name on the file, so I'm not sure who made it or what the name of it is. Regardless, you could probably find an equivalent set or find someone to send it to you on GR.

Loth, check out http://1ine.macclans.com - we have some tutorials and stuff on the site, im sure if you ask aramarth you can use some.

Also you could use that report i posted on the mp site about glitching...not everyone knows the ins/outs of it. I also found another very good tutorial done by a PC clanner...i can email if you want (just make sure his name is on the bottom)

Loth, thanks for the information.  I found a set of grid overlays at 1iNe.macclans in the downloads page.  They don't seem to have letters or numbers associated with the grids though, I'll keep looking.  Not sure it will be effective unless everyone has the same grid system.

I used to play Warbirds Flight-sim for a time. They had a system for specifying enemy plane positions on the map by visualy dividing an area in a 3x3 grid (9 squares) and using numbers corresponding to the numeric kpad to specify position e.g. 3 is the SE corner. A second number could also be given to give a more accurate position within that grid square.

Thanks BLZBUB14 (thanks to all).  As Mauti indicated above such a grid system already exists for GhR (DAMN R6 downloads).  I installed the .rsb files (copy into command maps folder after moving existing maps) and used them last night.  Seems like most people already had them as they understood my messages.  I was surprised that more people don't use them as they really helped a lot.

Loth - I really like your idea of a tactics resource (I need all the help I can get).  The GhR community is one of the great things about this game.  You got me to thinking (always painful) so I worked up a kind of outline of possible topics.  I'd post it here, but it's over two pages and so perhaps a little long for this forum.  I was going to e-mail it to you but thought I'd better check to see if you were interested first.

Sup GSR,
Loth posted this idea quite a while ago, then a bunch of us GHR playing cunts joined MP, so we decided to include a tactics section on the MP site...
http://208.45.96.61/hosted/mp/index.php?topic=tactics

There aren't many acuall tactics, mostly tricks, advice, gun reviews, ect... One day when i'm not feeling lazy i'll write a couple tactics, both team, and individual, plus maybe some map strategy.
Anyone who wants to can drop a story or tactic to be posted (use submissions in the Nav bar on the left). Or you can drop everyone an email at mp@macclans.com

I don't have this on our tactics page yet, but I have quite a few tips for those using launchers or support kits.  It would be worth the trouble any given player would give me to finally see an LMG used the right way.
