However, the lack of cross-platform compatibility MAY BE (please note the emphasis, this is purely speculation on my part), repeat MAY BE a result of the Mac version of RvS not having Punkbuster support. If and only if that is in fact the case, then cross-platform functionality may be added in a patch (or possibly an expansion) at some point in the future.

as far as I know, the incompatibility is the result of the use of DirectPlay as networking protocol by RvS PC. At the moment, there is possibility for the developers to write a mac-pendant to directplay, so RvS Mac uses an own networking protocol.

Well, as far as *I* know, the UT2003 engine does not use DirectPlay. They use their own networking code tuned for their game (which, probably not coincidentally, makes the engine cross-platform networkable, too). To scrap existing high-quality netcode and replace it with DirectPlay would require heads so far up asses that several fundamental laws of physics would be violated. I noticed that the PC version of Raven Shield has Punkbuster, while we obviously do not. I remembered that AA was not compatible for awhile due to lack of Punkbuster support on the Mac, so I speculate that the lack of compatibility in RvS might be due to the same cause.

I don't have Raven Shield for the Mac, so I am curious about the MultiPlayer area. When you click on Multiplayer, is there a functioning in game browser or is it just a link to open up GameRanger?

I dont have RvS for mac, too.

But b/c of the fact that the UBI.COM software couldbe be ported, there should not be a working ingame browser in the MP section. Maybe I am wrong, I think that there is none - just a tip of mine.

So I am also curios how the MP part of RvS on Mac looks like.

Loth, thats true, but I got this from the IMG RvS Preview:

Quote
Unfortunately, Mac versus PC network play is not possible due to Microsoft's proprietary network gaming technology. But you will be able to play with, and against, other Mac users. Players can chose between adversarial or cooperative play. You will be able to hook-up with buddies and make new pals through Gameranger.

the only proprietary networking software from Microsoft I can think of is DirectPlay.

It's my guess that Red Storm only licensed the graphics part of the Unreal engine, but not the networking part, and opted to use direct play instead.

Neither. I would hardly call it "a functioning in game browser," and there is no link to open GameRanger.

All you can do at the multiplayer screen is search for LAN games, or directly join an IP. Similar to rogue spear, but far more complex/detailed.
