Hey all, I just was curious here. What in your eyes makes someone a vet? Is it how long they have been on GR, how long they have played the game, or how good they are, what is it?

I ask this because the other day I was in a game with someone (cough*matt*cough) and he was saying that he was 3/4 of the way to being a vet....I had a good laugh and carried on. Then I got to thinking, why would he think that? Roll Eyes

Anyways, just wanted to hear your opinions on what it takes to be a vet. And Im sure it's not..... Tongue

Kilzo, out...

It is hard to define this, but i would say it is a combination of many aspects:

1) How long you play a game, b/c u can only be a vet in a special case. Some ppl for example are r6 vets but they are newb in RS or GhR.

2) It is how good u are - the leght of playing a game take also afffect on your SKIL. U get better the longer and often you play a game. Training effect.

3) U play not like a newb. - means U play thought through , using tactics. And u learn out of mistakes. U dont take evry lost game too serious, but u also can make a game after beeing bad the games before - simply b/c of beeing pissed of loosing or beeing pissed of ppl who play against/or with u.

In one word vets - are experinced players with having high skils when they were active.

Playing for a long time without learning out of mistakes dont make a vet of u! So u need the process of learning.

4) I would also call only ppl as vet, who have generaly good manners and respectfull to ohter ppl, also to newbs.

A vet, in my humble opinion, is someone who :

-has shown he/she knows how to play
-doesnt need to ask stupid questions in a game (eg: "which gun is best?"(in RS), and, "where is my minimap?" (in GhR))
-has good manners, and doesnt go ballistic if he/she loses.

all in all it is mainly about experience and mental age (eg. not being a 25-year old acting like a 12-year old pubering pimply kid)

It may be interesting not to make a list of who is a vet, but to have people who think they are vets post that. I'm not going to make any claims about my own veteranity, since making claims about myself is not my style

I'm with MacMan on this.

Imo the only criterias for a veteran in a specific game are;
having played the game for a substantial amount of time,
being a respectable member of the community (manners and all that),
knowing the game, not having to ask basic questions,
skills of course, doesn't really have to own all the time though (ownage comes and goes as everyone knows).

a vet is someone who plays with style and flair yet still manages to get 3 or 4 every game. combine this with a low GR id# & you have a vet.

One thing i forgot:

Noone can deside that he/she is a vet - that is what others ( the community ) do.

Thats the most funny thing when someone sais he is on the way to get a vet - b/c evry one is kinda on the way to get a vet - newb start his way other are a bit more in front.

But when someone says the he made the way for 75% than it is more then funny it is stupid.

When I think of a "vet", I think of someone who has come from Rainbow Six to Rogue Spear ( I guess in a year or so, it'll be someone who's come from Rogue Spear to Ghost Recon ). - But there is more to it than that.

I consider a "vet" someone who has either come from Rainbow Six, or came in early to RS, ( back before full RS, maybe ).

I don't think that GameRanger ID is really an important part of it, sure you have to have a semi low one ( 60,000 or below ), but just because you have a GameRanger ID in the 200s, doesn't make you a vet, it goes by what time you joined the RS/R6/GhR community.

Also, I commenly see so called "Vets" bitch about lag and all, fairly often. - There's a difference between knowing how to act, and actually acting that way. Example; a guy like Silent Killer is a vet, even though he acts like he's a 5 year old in a mental hospital. I belive that anyone who came into things back in the Rainbow Six days, before Rogue Spear, should be considered a vet.

Just my 2?.

Well, I think that the general consideration of a "vet" is someone who has been in this gaming community. There are players like you, and Hitman, who come from the PC side and have played a long time, but are relativly new to this gaming community ( Hitman's been here about a year, you've been here about 6 months ). - I think that most people here consider a vet someone who has spent a long period of time in the *DAMN R6/RS/GhR community, and not just someone who has played the game for a long time.

"Sure I blow at RS" - You don't blow at RS. You're one of the better players in one of the best clans. Or was that meant as a joke?

Well, the only people in consideration of being called a vet by me are those who have proven themselves in combat in games that I have played or have reputations with people I respect/respected....and there are very few of them.

So what I am getting at is that most of you forum dwellers are not vets in my eyes - don't take it personally.

Hmm. A few people have said I'm a vet, but I don't really consider myself one. My GR ID is pretty low for an RS player(31780, booyah), but I didn't play R6 much, and I don't think I bought RS until like 3 months after it was already out. In my opinion, a vet is someone who has respect from a good portion of the community. They don't have to be very good, but they've been around long enough that most people at least recognize them, and most of the other vets have respect for the fella. So, in my opinion, being a vet is mostly just having earned the respect of your peers, in this case anyways.
If you want to get really technical though, the only real vets are the ones that have completed all of the single player missions, know a lot about RS, know all the maps, and just have an overall veteran-ness about them.

A vet is someone who doesn't Lie, Cheat and BS all the time. Anyone who remember's assassin's cyber pimping, buddha, kos starting, and has been playing ever since with a level of repsect is a vet.

Also if your not hated and are in the "leet forum innercircle" you are a vet.  Wink

I guess you can call me a Bolo vet! Wink

"Also if your not hated and are in the "leet forum innercircle" - I see you threw that one in to eliminate Bondo and I.

I personaly don't consider how people act an acurate indicator of wether they're a "vet" or not. There can be your little newbie out there, who acts polite, is respectful, and is an ok player, but far from being a "vet". I'd give it to anyone who origonated as a Rainbow Six player.

People see this in different ways, A veteran is someone who has be here for at keast 2 years and is an above average player. Also it could be someone who has been here for a very long time (since the good ole' days), but an average player. Also it could be someone who has been here for 6 months and is a phenomonal player.

I disagree to both of the things that you said there, Matt. I've been around for longer than about 98% of the community, my first account was in the 200s. - Does this make me a vet? Maybe a GameRanger vet, but it has nothing to do with wether I'm a vet in the RS/R6/GhR community or not.

Nor does playing skill. Someone can come in from the PC world, and be a great player, but only be here for 6 months, and you will consider them a vet? - In my opinion, a vet is someone who has spent a long time with the community, thats why I usually refer to it as someone who origonated as a R6 player, before RS.

Just my 2?

I consider someone who is really good and has had a lot of schooling in helping animals.  They save their lives and stuff.  That's the person I consider a vet.   Sort of like Wombat's mom.
