The Lobby by Lord Odin Review by TRushton 28.3.2002

Don't these pictures bring the memories flooding back? You can almost smell the popcorn with this mod.

  • As is obvious from the title, this is a recreation of THAT scene from the Matrix - and it's near picture-perfect. In fact, this mod has class written all over it (well, actually, it's got "The Matrix" written all over it, but you get the idea) new sounds, a new splash page and even music!
  • This is a VERY small map though, not so much CQB as MQB (microscopic quarters battle). The nearest parallel is the opening area in the subway map in Urban Operations - with exactly the same number of unpleasant surprises. So there's lots of dancing between pillars here, folks. It also means that this is not a map for great numbers of people - 3 on 3 is probably the max you'd want to try, although this map is brilliant for 1 on 1 fights, particularly if you limit it to pistols and smoke grenades. The blue team always start near the metal detectors, while the gold team guards the elevators.
  • More evidence of Lord Odin's attention to detail is both the single player and multiplayer assault mission (in fact, the mod supports all those exotic multiplayer mission types which no-one ever seems to try - assassination, anyone?) - which mirrors the movie almost exactly. First you wade through some rather incompetent security weenies while the metal detector beeps frantically at you, and then as you begin to move between the pillars, suddenly the heavy security appear - who bear an alarming similarity to team rainbow. They fan out to cover the far end and stop you from getting to the elevator. I initially thought that the single player assault mission didn't work - until Mauti pointed out to me that I actually had to get BOTH agents to the lift. Sheesh.
  • Even in terrorist hunt with 50 tangos and the music blaring, there was no appreciable slowdown on my ancient G3 466, so Lord Odin's done a great job of keeping the mod playable on all computers.
  • In fact, the only thing missing from this are new player skins. There are some matrix skins out there, but they really don't do it. The closest is probably the saboteur skin from Team HAK uniform essentials. But I wish one had been provided.
  • Nonetheless, this is a great small map for full-on action. It may not have wall-crawling, but you can always turn your monitor sideways for that. So what are you waiting for? Turn up the bulletholes, crank up the music, put on your best black leather overcoat and get to work.
