Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on February 12, 2006, 07:15:14 pm
Here it is, the February Quiz!  This month the winner of the quiz will receive a 1GB iPod NANO--my present to you for not having a quiz since Hurricane Katrina ripped through my home!  The quiz will be on General Knowledge!

Good Luck!

General Knowledge Quiz:

1. What is the only unit in the history of the U.S. Air Force to have fought as infantry? (careful, it's a trick question!)

2. What Canon SLR Lens is capable of producing the greatest magnification?

3. What is the most powerful handgun Glock makes?

4. What day did ebay start?

5. What two restaurants, first opened in New Orleans, were to have opened within a week after Hurricane Katrina hit Biloxi, MS? (They may eventually open, but they were both destroyed before their Grand Openings)

6. What essential amino acid prevents cold sores from forming on your lips?

7. What U.S. State has the most restrictive ballot access laws?

8. What was the first Macintosh to feature Expansion Slots? (careful, it's a trick question!)

9. Where is most of the pigment for White Paint used by Ford Motor Company made?

10. Who was the first U.S. President with no military experience to serve during Wartime?

Yes, due to the higher difficulty in this quiz, as well as the fact that I havn't done one since before Hurricane Katrina hit here in August of 2005, I have decided to upgrade the prize to the new 1GB iPod Nano!  Ships free to anywhere in the world...even Austria.  ;)

Congratulations to Mauti and his girlfriend for winning the February Quiz!  They will be receiving a brand new 1GB iPod Nano for their efforts!

The correct answers are:

1. The 14th Bombardment Squadron in the Philippines, when the Japanese attacked they were forced to fight as infantry, the only Air Force unit in history to do so.

2. Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5X Macro.  This lens has the ability to magnify its subject 5x bigger than life size.

3. Glock 20, which is also one of the most powerful handguns ever made.

4. Labor Day 1995

5. Acme Oyster House and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse...now I have to wait 18 months to get my two favorite places to eat rebuilt :(

6. L-Lysine.  Take a few of those a day and you will never get a cold sore!

7. Oklahoma, my home state, has the most restrictive ballot access laws...they only allow two parties to be on the ballot!

8. The Macintosh XL was the first Mac to feature expansion slots.  It had 3 proprietary expansion slots and came out a full year before the Mac Plus.  It was the renamed Apple Lisa, only with a true Mac Operating System.

9. The Dupont plant in Delisle, MS, makes most of the pigment for white paint used by Ford Motor Company.  It's about 30 miles from my house.  The pigment of course is Titanium Dioxide.

10. Thomas Jefferson was the first U.S. President with no military experience to lead the nation during Wartime.  The war was the Tripolitan War from 1800 to 1805 against the Barbary Pirates.

Good job Mauti!

Thanks =)

Well question 3 was actually one of the easier ones. Just visit the official Glock homepage, http://glock.com and go through the model descriptions and it gonna say: "The 10mm Auto GLOCK 20 ranks with the most powerful autopistols ever made" ;-)

1, 5, and 9 were the toughest ones so far for us. Nina and I already discuss who can use the Nano on which days!

Thanks again GS for the great and really challenging quiz. I took us about 20 hours to complete all questions.

Bye,

Nina and Mauti

Hint there are also other search engines than Google. Some are beta but deliver other search results... ;-)

Further what helped us a lot was the ability to search in 2 languages(german and english). However if was a true challenge.

Actually GS's 1st question is incorrect because of the following:
The USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947.
His question should have been worded as when the USAAF..(Still under the US Army) and NOT USAF.

Wrong...U.S. Air Force History includes the predecessor organizations of the Air Force from the creation of the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army Signal Corps on August 1, 1907, through today.  That includes the Army Air Service, Army Air Corps, Army Air Forces, etc.  Take a look at a chart showing Air Force Medal of Honor Recipients sometime...it shows the guys who were awarded it from World War I and World War II under the Air Force chart, not the Army.

The USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947

Prior to 1947, military aviation was the responsibility of the Army, while the Navy maintained a fleet air arm on its fleet of aircraft carriers. The Army branch was known as the U.S. Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Army Air Force.

Dude, I am a military historian, not to mention I served in both the Army and the Air Force.  I think I know what I'm talking about here.  The Air Force Historical Research Agency, based out of Maxwell AFB, AL, has the sole responsibility of keeping up with the history of the U.S. Air Force.  Guess what?  That history goes all the way back to 1907!  Don't know if you know this or not, but there is a holiday called "Air Force Day" which is celebrated on August 1...because that's the day that the Air Force came into existance...it simply went through various names before being resorted under the new Department of Defense on September 18, 1947.

Thus, although it was called Air Force Day, its first celebration was staged by the Army Air Forces and not by the U.S. Air Force.

Oh..and..

Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman "in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation's air strength." August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army.
