Title: Peace Corps Destination
Post by: *DAMN Bondo on October 05, 2004, 06:15:50 pm
Between not being decided what I want to do for a career, not having much luck finding a job, and wanting to do something important with my time, I have decided to join the Peace Corps. For me this is the practical alternative to joining the military considering I am anti-war and don't like Don't Ask, Don't Tell. It allows me to see the world a bit and grow up a bit more to be ready for the rest of my life when I return.

Just for fun (since I have my own preferences) Where would you want to go if you were in the Peace Corps or where do you think I should go? FWIW, though don't let it change your vote, but I am leaning heavily towards Eastern Europe at the moment, especially Ukraine and Romania. My second region is probably Asia followed by the Caribbean and Pacific Islands. Latin America and Africa are not really considerations for me (being equatorial and continental, my scandinavian ass would last like three seconds before getting skin cancer or heat stroke.) While the N.Africa/Middle East interests me, there are the obvious safety concerns for white Americans.

I picked Asia for you.  I think it would do you some good to go live in a Communist country like Mongolia, China, or Vietnam for a while.

Have you already been accepted?
Do you get a choice of where to go?
What languages do you speak?

Otherwise, kudos to you.  Working in the Peace Corps is noble, IMHO.

Loud, to your questions

No, but the little mini-test thing said it was highly likely I'd be accepted.

I'm not sure how much choice if any that I get, but since I'm fairly open I hope I can at least avoid going where I'd rather not.

I speak basic Spanish in addition to English. Far from fluency or even conversational, but I have a general knowledge of Spanish pronounciation and grammar.

There is an informational meeting in the city in a week that I'll go to and sign up at and find out more of the details. An interesting note, my aunt was in the Peace Corps ages ago in Malaysia...I have a Malaysian Indian uncle ;)

Very noble cause, a buddy of mine singed up and shipped off to Uganda for 2 years, which would be insane. I hear it's a hell of a waiting list, but good luck with whatever you do.
