I'm actually a huge soccer fan, I voted Germany mainly because I like the team (they whooped the U.S. in the last world cup) and they do have a damn good team. But the bigger question remains, who will win World Cup 2004? U.S.A. ;D

Germany have a good team, but a lot of their players have aged by a few years, and they arn't the team they used to be. It will be interesting to see how England and France square up tonight - and especially interesting to see how the likes of Henry and Viera shape up!

Yeah definatly not half as good to watch. Italy never showed the magic i felt there should have been - a couple of great moments when Toti finally woke up a bit but it really wasn't great stuff. Fail play to to Denmark however for some decent play.

Neither looks like lifting the title if thats all they can manage though!

You guys are over there watching the best of the best and I watched the Chicago Fire vs. the Los Angelas Galaxy yesterday, though it was a great game I miss watching the international games. I agree, the Italy game vs Denmark was not that exciting.  Italy was playing more defensively rather than their usual offensive style of play.  Although, Italy seemed to have the game in their back pocket when almost scoring a for sure goal...that Denmark goalie, is what saved their teams ass.  Great save, looked just like an NHL goaltending save.  It was definetly a goalie game and not a player game.

Considering Itali emerged with three strikers i expected a lot more from them, although to be fair the Danes put up a strong defence and certainly placed pressure on the italians in several places. Yeah definatly a couple of fantastic saves in that match though

Well we've got a big match from group D (the group of death) between Germany and the Netherlands.

A loss for either could be the end as this has to be the hardest group with germany, netherlands, latvia and the Czech Republic.  Should be a cracking match!!

Well if Italy are going to win it they are going to have to pull some better performance out the hat - they really failed to inpress in the game against Danmark and there are some seriously strong teams in this compertition.

I was pretty shocked by the Netherlands today i must say, they were increadably lacking in the first half. Stam woke up in the second and i think really helped them to wake up but for much of the match their strikers were stranded as they failed to feed the ball foward.

ok true, however under Erikson we have only lost two competative games - in the quater finals against brazil (which we should have won) and against france the other night (which we should/did/kindof won). And thats not to shabby. There is no denying the quality of the English side but its true they havn't finnished the job for a while, a long while, a very long while.

Tomorrow should be a great game, we're missing a few key players but the squad is strong enough i feel to cover them sufficently

I mean cmon. One of the Czecks was holding a Dutch guy around his waist, and dragged him down to the ground. IN the penalty box too btw, and the Dutch guy had the ball and could have gotten it in if it wasn't for that guy. There were alot of very bad calls by the ref. It also seemed to me that the Czecks went down quite easily....

The ref in the czech match..come on archer. All the dutch players did was run around sulking on every decision..by the ref, the coach or the players. If they want to win, they should grow up. The bad calls from the ref affected both sides. And Ruud.....ah yes...what a bastard. He was the worst of them. Stop talking about bad calls in that match, and celebrate good football instead, because what I saw in that match was football that can bring the Czech republic a new trophy.

we don't have the games on TV here in the US, so i was wondering if anyone knows a site where i could stream it, or at least check up on all the team's standings and what not. although listening to it on the radio still had a nice effect when scholes tied it up.

And btw, what is up with italian journalists? Accusing sweden and denmark for ganging up on them and plotting a 2-2 draw to kick italy out of the competition. RAI, the TV channel(i think it is RAI) said they would set up extra cameras to monitor the swedish and danish bench to make sure there was no foul play. Some italian journalists got busted while trying to plant a false fax, where sweden and denmark agreed on the outcome of the match. A footy watergate. When are italians going to learn that this only occurs in italian football and not the rest of europe.

There is so much prestige in this match that I predict a win....dont want to guess for which team though.

Well lets take a look at the Portugal v spain match... Portugal looked great on the ball, their footwork etc is brilliant, but they just couldn't create chances for themselves, they couldn't create and get the goals. There is no doubt that they have some bloody class in that team however.

England - They obviously have sevear issues defending against set pieces. However going forward they look strong, and in general so does their defence. Rooney is proving to be quite somthing, and there is no doubt those surging runs can cause chaos.

as i see it now, if england sort out their set piece defence, and beckham and own who both have been weak so far, pull it together, then England have a grea chance...

If they don't .... then heaven help us ;)

i'd love to see owen start tearing it up again. if portugal win, i pre-blame it on the fact that theyre at home  ;) (despite the 40 something some odd brit fans...) i am pretty confidant in this though, they'll be fighting hard.

OK, where to begin....

I can't stand it when people always point their fingers at Italian soccer players, and begin to say bs stuff like, how they are the oscar winners of soccer always taking bs dives, etc, I think today was a perfect example of how Bulgaria fit that bill and not Italy.

First, I agree Italy did not play the tourny how they normally play or their style of play from the get go.  They lost the 1st game, Italians complaining about the weather and socks hindering their game, I am not inclined to believe that especially since Kenians run thousands of Km marathons barefoot, however, when you analyze their style of play from years past, especially considering that Italy is an offensive/attacking team rather than a defence one, makes me suspicious if perhaps their was "some" validity in their claims; they have always had slow starts at the beginning of tournaments but have always been the attackers and sharp shooters.

If you look at the game and have some soccer experience you will see that the game was decided on the Refs calls and not the players on either team.  There were nurmerous amounts of questionable, and IMO, bs calls the ref was making.  For instance, the penalty kick awarded to Bulgaria, was a bs call if I ever saw one, both players were simply leaning on each other to try and gain control of the ball - ummm, hello? this is soccer, no?.  And even if I was inclined to see the point of view of the Refs perspective, at a deciding game as this one, when making big calls like this, generally refs decide in the favor of the defending team, this is common practice not a personal opinion.

Second, this may sound like a contradiction, and yes it is my biased opinion especially considering that I am Italian, the commentators when I was watching the game here in Canada on TSN were english and scottish and canadian background and they themselves acknowledged that the deserving penalty kick that was not awarded to Italy was certainly warranted.  It doesn't take an experienced soccer play to have seen this, again, a questionable call but w/e.

Third,  as far as the Swe vs Denmark game, and peoples claims that it was set up, I haven't seen the game yet but after all the bs calls on so many italian players for free kicks and questionalble offsides, especially today on Del Piero and how Italian fans were the only nation participating who couldn't get enough tickets to come support the teams and everyone else suspiciously were in the hundreds, whats up with that?;makes me a little suspicious.  The fact that Totti gets a 3 game suspension instead of 1, which I thought was rediciously not warranted, espcially since the video evidence the "Denmark press" provided the "Denmark team" in their complaints, showed that they had a camera for the entire 90mins of play dedicated to Totti alone, makes me fully understand why Italy set-up their own cameras to monitor the Swe vs Den game. The iThis other claim about the planted fax, etc, I haven't heard that, so who knows.

Bottom line is, IMO, Italy's Totti was an idiot for doing what he did and regardless of how much Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen was or was not provoking Totti, he deserved punishment.  Italy did not play the way they normally do and so the Italians could have done a bit of a better job.  Stop knockin Wops...

Nomad you've got to admit there were some pretty creative dives from one or two italians in that mtch however, a couple of comedy trips and spins etc... im not saying anyone else does it - hell ive seen it in just about every match so far - but in the match against Bulgaria they were throwing themselves left right and centre.

Ref had a hard game on his hands, neither team helped at all. I know italy seem to think there is a world wide conspiracy against them now in football matches but i just dont see it. sweden v denmark match was no way a set up, not one smidgen, not a teenie weenie mouse bit. natta, nope, zilch, nein, negative ;)

tis all a pity though, i rather like watching the italians play, been interesting that several people have said though that they have started to shoot themselves in the foot as their clubs spend their money and effort on foriegn players, which has meant the sqad has got weaker and weaker as the current players loose their prime... i dunno

BFG, I have to disagree with one point you made about last game Italy played.  I didn't think they were throwing themselves "purposefully" left and right at all, most of the time  :) especially since they knew that this game was a must win.  Almost after all their real or bs dives, they wouldn't just lie there and put on a Bobby Deniro performance of pain, they would be the first ones to pop right back up and try and get into play.  Bulgaria on the other hand, were falling right and left and putting on the performance of a life time, especially towards the end of the game, I mean the  Italians themselves were lifting up their arms in disgust, implying to keep playing the game.

However, even though I haven't seen the Swe vs Den game, I don't believe that the game was set up, I believe its just a bunch of Italians or fans that are simply pissed off that it didn't go their way, is all.  I also read somewhere that Italians were spending their $ on foreign players and thus were the downfall of their team, but I say, pick the best players you can get yer hands on the let the players play soccer.  Bottom line is, go home (Italians) and learn some proper etiquette on the field and then come back and play; personally I believe that some of those wops could have learned something from their predecessors.

hehe well yeah i must admit i didn't see the whole game, and i did see some creative tripping coming from Bulgaria, but i did see a couple of fantastic ones from italy - one of the guys did a fantastic run, past at least 4 defenders, but he ran out of puff and as he came up to a 5th just inside the box he did a little half jump and floored himself - managing to in absolute agony, before looking up quick enough to see the refs reaction, and hopping up to get on with it in desgust that the ref didn't give him a penalty - it was rather funny...

but then I did see a corker fromt bulgaria, how on earth he thought he was going to pull they eyes over the reff on that one i don't know!!

well, it seems that Germany won't be in the finals either ;D ;D

Nomad, fistly....when italy leaves a tournament like this at the early stages, there is allways a cry from the italians blaming all but themselves. Dont know why, becuase ultimatly its the team itself that has to score the goal, not the ref and not the opposing team. And certainly not the other teams in the group. I dont believe for a second that the penalty against italy was "planned". Refs do bad calls, thats it.

secondly. Italy played like shit in euro2004 and deserved the ticket home. Italy can play brilliant football when they want to. Totti is a good example of what happens to the italian team when they fail. Look at your own team, and not other factors when you look for an explanation for why it went wrong. Totti should infact be banned for the whole tournament for what he did. And I hope that frei, who did the same, will get equal, if not harder, punishment for that. Unsportsmanlike and childish.

So, go home italy and try again in 2 years. Hopefully you have learned something from this. I certainly hope so, because then i might see italy at its best, which is great to watch.

Jesus Christ England are playiing the second half in their own half, Owen is up front most of the time on his own - with vassell coming back a lot to defend.  But in terms of attack we are doing very little - the ball is all with the portugese who are keeping it well

England need to wake up a bit, portugese arn't exactly getting shots on toarget but there is a uneasy feeling in my stomach watching England being so sleepy.... we're playing like it was 5minutes left of the game - not 25!  >:(

england played the best match in this entire tournament, regardless of what happens next. despite the fact that i am an england fan, you can't deny that the ref was biased in giving away free kicks, robbing legitamate goals, and allowing players to be pushed onto the ground from behind in clear view and not issuing yellowcards, yet england still managed to overcome through all the BS and having to see ronaldos dirtbag smile everytime he threw himself onto the ground. after a game like that, if england had been given the goal they earned, i would have expected them to win the tournament.
god i can't stress how much bullshit was flowing. that swiss bastard sold himself because england smoked his country's team.

nah england didnt play well for 87 mn. They had a goal, and did rest on their laurels while Portugal worked its ass off. They should have secure another goal instead !

Well the goal that England was denied was a good call from the ref, on Campbell I believe it was?  At first, I thought it was bs, and that they scored and I thought there goes another ref making dumb calls, but then when I reviewed the replay, it was clear that the ball was armed in and not headed/chested.  Sorry, just stating the facts, although I agree England did come back from behind and did a good job at that.

i saw it about 5 or 6 times, and i will watch it many more, and i see a perfectly legal goal, the goalkeeper was on the ground after the first shot off the top bar, he had no chance of stopping campbell, he couldn't have even been fouled from there.

I never said that the penalty against Italy was "planned" I simply said that it was a bs call.  It was a legitimate attempt by BOTH players to try and take possession of the ball, pushing and shoving is part of the game, the difference where it should be given a free kick or penalty, is if it was intentional, and clearly it was not.  I also said, if you read closely, that during deciding games such as these refs (in general) make calls in favour of the defending side, just as much as it would have been a bs call if it was in the Bulgarian goal box.



Your right that Italy played like crap, and deserved to not move on.  The Totti incedent was deserving of punishment and even though Trapattoni's strategy was all revolved around Totti going into the tourny, that should teach Totti and other players that that kind of shit is not tolerated.  But I disagree, that Totti should have gotten banned from the entire tourny, he should have gotten 1 game, 2 at most, and yes, this is my biased opinion, but my opinion would be the same whehter it was Italy on the fire or any other team.

Not trying to start a flamer, but I ask that you look at it again.  Not Campbell, but the other England player that had his had raised up, we interfering with the goalies attempt to use his arms.  And, besides it went off his upper anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered.

1 last thing I forgot to mention, I don't very much follow England soccer leagues, but from what I saw in this game (alone), James, didn't seem like a great goalie; I don't think too much about Ricardo, either, but did you notice that he made that save with his BARE hands!!!???  :o  And, it must have been sweet revenge for him to score too.

yeah it was terry jumping with cambell - both had eyes on the ball - but the only foal was maybe cambell fouling and jumping on and over terry - yes terry had his arms out as he jumped but that did not affect the goaly - who literally fell into them and slid down... everyone ive seen has questioned the referee - and although that was a major decision it certainly wasn't the only really unusual one to go Portugals way.

As I said in a previous post, when it comes to deciding games as these, ie. World Cup, etc, generally the ref in split second doubtful decisions will generally pick the defending team to rule for, in this case he did that, but I still feel that it was warranted, but in all honesty, I will see if I can get another look at it on the sports news, as I did not record it.

hopefully there will be a clip of it somewhere online. and in the event that the goalie had been fouled (which he certainly wasn't), and there was double overtime and into shootouts, david beckham's fuck up of a kick was because of the sinking, clumped up ground, and everyone seemed to notice it after this, because they were all jumping on that patch to flatten it.

Apparently England had made an official complaint to UEFA regarding the unacceptable state of the penalty spots... so it will be interesting what comes out of that. I guess at the end of the day though the spot was in the same condition for both sides...

There is no team left out there with the talent to take on Portuagle, with the possible exception of Holland. Watch the second half of the England if you want to see that. They played like shit against Greece, since then, they've dominated.

France got exactly what they deserved. They came 60 seconds away from losing to England, they played like shit and tied Croatia. Against Greece, they didn't attack at all, they spend the entire game looking for the perfect goal. Rather than having Zadian(sp) cross it into the box everytime, they wasted their time with horrible outside shots, and Greece won by the odd goal.

There was nothing more pleasurful to me than watching Italy beat Bulgaria, but still get knocked out thanks to Sweeden and Denmark.

My teams from the start were Portuagle ( always been a Portuagle fan ), and Holland because they're one of the few teams with the balls to attack.

Btw, if anyone knows somewhere I can view the SF's and the final, I'd pay up to 100 bucks. ( Don't have cable TV back home ).

If the belgish team wins against The Chzechs, I would also say that Belgium has also a good chance against Portugal. Both Teams played a great EURO Competition so far.

Watched them all ( except when both games were on at 7:45 for the last 2 days of the group matches ), at our house in England.

The Chzechs would worry me a bit, afterall, their reserves did beat a pretty strong German team. However, I think the combination of Figo and Ronaldo give Portuagle both the quick strike ability, and ball control that they'll need to oust the Chzechs.

Well, although Jan Koller should have been awarded a penalty, I have to say that Greece deserved the win. The czechs did not score and seemed confused when greece moved on the pitch. Intelligent play by their german coach, and a nice goal by Dellas. I hope Greece takes the trophy home.

If you watch the replay closely enough ( take a screen shot, zoom in, and stare at it for hours ), you will see that Richardo(sp) was pushed out of the way as the ball was bouncing around in his box. This push was the one and only reason he wasn't able to block the shot.

Well, if the ref had been watching closely(as he is suposed to do) he would have seen that Ricardo jumped into Campbell....and the goal should therefore be allowed. There is nothing in that situation that justifies a freekick for portugal.

Well good job Greece.  This tourny has definetly been that of underdogs, Greece was one of the least fav to win this tourny and was ranked 3rd last, so great job to them.  I am thinking of going to Little Portugal and waving the Brasil flag in their faces, so they can get a taste of their own medicine.
