Title: OS X
Post by: Ace on October 02, 2001, 04:12:36 am
Well I got 10.1 this weekend, and I love it. I just wanted to know what everyone else who has it thinks of it. For all you X hates out there, get 10.1 and you will change your mind.

So far so GREAT.  I liked 10.0, and 10.1 fixes all the little problems I had with it.  Now, to see if RS works under X now... or do I still have to boot 9...

My one attempt of using OS X pissed me off so much I vowed never to progress, much like I vowed never to move to RS from R6.  I will probably try to use it in the future thanks to the pdf function so I can distribute my zines over web, that is if I ever start writing zines again.

Zom, having a laptop with X on it is pretty sweet...

Well I just tried playing R6 under 10.1, and to my surprise it was actually not that bad. I may consider playing under it all the time. Don't get me wrong, it definitely lags a little, but not nearly as bad as before. All and all, job well done by Apple.

Oh yeah, and with the new version of IE (5.1) the forums no longer crash it.

Hello! I am consitering 10.1 for my iMac, but I only have 192MB ram... 10.0 didn't run well on it, so im thinking that I need more ram, is this correct??

Wrath obviously has some reason to hide under an alias... oh well

Yes you will need a more ram for your little crappy imac. On an imac like yours, i would guess that with 10.1 and 384 megs of ram, it would run pretty well. It runs well on the g4 400 with 256 megs back home, and its awesome on my powerbook.

My wife's iBook (300mhz maxed at 320megs of RAM) runs 10.1 fine. ?It ran 10.0.4 like crap, but that was more about how slow OS X was, vs now it's much quicker.

Oh, and everyone.... let me introduce you to th3 sp0t....  you all should remember Romulus...

Rom... have the balls to come in under your own name... eh?

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: Ace on October 03, 2001, 06:11:31 pm
either th3 spot is wrath, or somehow rom got the rs-hub.hypermart.net from wrath

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: me on October 03, 2001, 06:51:09 pm
Eh. Romulus != Th3 Sp0t... Romulus=Th3 Sp0t's friend... Romulus got rs-hub from Wrath, so he could use CGI's on HM servers, until he bought space... Then he gave ME (Th3 Sp0t) both his GR account and rs-hub account. I don't know what ID he is under in GR, but he was sick of you ???????? bothering him. Thank you.

Rom pretending he has friends.... *shakes head*

On the OS X 10.1 issue, iv just bought it myself and am currently awaiting its arrival.... However, (this question is for all of you government people) Apple.com charged me $8.04 sales tax. Now isnt it stated somewhere in the constitution that interstate commerce is not to be taxed?  If so, this is unconstitutional....  :o

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: Bondo on October 11, 2001, 06:58:54 pm
You can be charged sales tax if they are based in the same state as you.  But ya, taxing interstate commerce is usually a bad thing.  Maybe just a round-about way off getting more money for shipping and product price though.

Heh, thank god im in American Government otherwise i wouldnt of caught that sales tax

And they're shipping it from Philly and im in Detroit sooooo, im still guessing there isnt anything i can do about it unless i would wana sue over an 8 dollar sales tax ?8)

Apple can get away with taxing in every state as long as one Apple Authorized retailer exists.

I have been using Mac OS X since the beta days (1H39), and seen all the revisions. Apple made some sweet improvements in this version.

Recommendation to everyone: Under X, go to the terminal and use the 'top' command. This will bring up a ProcessViewer type thing, used under the UNIX command line system. Under the area marked 'Pageouts:', if there is a number greater than 0, you should get more RAM.

For those how don't know, a Pageout under X is when the system is accessing too many commands at once, and needs to use it's virtual memory, which hits severely on preformance. If you have 0, then you never left the RAM, and have plenty for multiple applications.

I have 448MB of RAM onboard my G3/350 B&W, and I have a number of pageouts ranging at about 1000 after a few hours of extended use. I plan un upgrading to 768MB soon.

D'oh! So my B&W G3 300 with 192 megs of ram won't cut it?! :(

Pageouts: 64529

I got OS X.1 about two weeks ago. I put it on my iBook and I love it. It's quick and easy. It runs fine on my comp: orig. iBook 300mhz, 160mb ram, 3gig hd. It didn't slow down my computer at all. To play R6 I just boot up on 9.2.1 and R6 runs as normal with nothing slowed down. It's great.

Then, what your local computer store hasn't gotten the update cds in yet? Or have they just been selling out?

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: Grifter on October 14, 2001, 12:54:30 am
It's not for sale, it's free from the local stores.

The down side is our local CompUSA had a line starting 3 hours before the store opened.  They were out of stock before the store ever opened (they took names from the people lined up I heard, so they could come back and get it after the stock guys opened the boxes up).  Lucky for me I know a guy that works there and he held back a copy for me.  I never would have expected there to be that kind of rush on it.  Yes, I owe him a couple beers.

You can order it right from Apple, but it's like $20 for shipping and handeling.  Since they are giving it out free... I think I'll check the liscensing on it, and see if distributing it on a server would be warez or not...  You never know.

So you're telling me that this is what people do when they don't live 10 minutes from Apple? Man that sucks...

Post by: jn.blackhand on October 14, 2001, 05:33:47 pm
yeah, my local comp usa got 50 copies. They were all gone in ten minutes of the store opening.

I gave them my name and phone number, and they said they'd call when they got more in. Haven't gotten that call yet...

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: jn.blackhand on October 14, 2001, 05:36:38 pm
grift, as for distributing the software through a server, it would technically be illegal. however, apple has made no comment on this, and if you can find it on hotline, I don't think you'll get in trouble.

after all, it's a free update...

The only reason it isn't available for download is because 600+ mbs would take a SHITLOAD of bandwith on Apple's part.

Well, I spent most of the weekend playing RtoCW on my brothers comp and I've now found the reason to move to X at least part time.  That game is going to rule.

Post by: Bondo on October 14, 2001, 10:56:36 pm
Ok, I've now tried playing R6 with classic.  It sucks.  It isn't unplayable but it is slow enough to make a difference.  I will be playing all my R6 in 9.

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: Ace on October 15, 2001, 01:45:54 am
Yeah, I'm torn. R6 runs halfway decent in classic for me, but I'm lazy and don't like switching to 9. For now however, I usually switch over to get the performance.

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: ?{RiP}? Vapor on October 15, 2001, 11:04:00 am
Well, I have just about no choice but to switch over to play. Because in order to get GR open in X it opens 9 like a program so therefore, with my shit video card it would run so horribly. But I am happy then when I do switch back to 9 it runs just as good as it did before I install X on my comp.

Title: Re: OS X
Post by: kos.viper on October 16, 2001, 09:42:38 am
Haha, cuz of Vapors poor 160MB RAM, he cant run classic at the same time  8)

OS X 10.1 is very nice, and smooth.... but, i have 256mb and it's still kinda slow while running classic, hopefully since my new 256 has finally shipped that it'll run faster w/ more RAM.... either that or my gay 400MHz iMac DV is too slow to handle the xtreme  power of OS X

*grabs the 10.1 disc and laughs*

*then looks around all suspicious like*

*says thanks macman. then hides*

*laughs at apple and their incompetent way of distributing 10.1 updates*

*wonders if the planning behind the "up to date" system was masterminded by Romulus*

*goes and tries to find non existant pictures of Apple's top secret digital hub add on thingy*

*smiles as he reaches 300 posts*

*bastard*

*squeals in excitement as he finally LEGALLY obtains the 10.1 update cd*

*sighs emphatically as he saves wrath the trouble of combining posts by modifying his original*
