Developer Digitial Illusions today announced that a Macintosh version of Battlefield 1942 will be ported, published, and distributed by Aspyr Media. Aspyr will be publishing Battlefield 1942 and the Road to Rome expansion pack together as a bundle. An official announcement from Aspyr is due later today.

Here's more from the Digital Illusions press release:
Aspyr has a profitable history of publishing great games on Macintosh, and we hope the success of Battlefield allows us to bring even more games to the platform, said Patrick S?derlund, CEO of Digital Illusions.

Battlefield 1942 and Road to Rome for Macintosh will be sold together at full price for approximately 50 USD. The launched is planned to the second quarter of 2004.
IMG has posted a special first look preview of the game that includes some in-game movies from Battlefield 1942, The Road To Rome expansion pack, and the wildly popular BF 1942 mod, Desert Combat.

Update: As expected, Aspyr has officially announced the Mac version. Here are the preliminary system requirements:
? Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later
? PowerPC G3/G4/G5, 700 MHz or faster
? 256MB of RAM
? 1.6 GB free disk space
? 3D Graphics Acceleration required (ATI Radeon 7500/nVidia GeForce 2 or better, 32MB of VRAM)
? DVD drive required to install and play

Multiplayer Requirements:
? Internet and LAN (TCP/IP) play supported
? Internet play requires a 56Kbps or faster connection

Since they have Mac screen shots already, I believe they'll get it done in the next 2-3 months.

But I really hope they do a better port than they did of MoH.

Aspyr has a tricky history with ports.  If it's on an engine they are used to, like the UT engine, they don't do a bad job at all (Elite Force I and II, RTCW), but if you played MoH on the PC, you know how much the port sucks on the Mac (to be honest it's more of a mac hosting problem than a client problem).

I really like this game, and some of it's mods, so I'm hoping for the best.

Man Cossack, my thoughts exactly.  Do you know any good combat flight sims for the Mac we can play online to see which of us is the master of the sky?

At the end of the IMG preview is a link to a Desert Combat movie (http://www.insidemacgames.com/previews/view.php?ID=144&Page=3#). I highly recommend the movie, and thanks to [NL] Godfather, I was able to translate it for those of you who, like me, felt that you were missing out on parts of it.

INTRO
"Seit Tausenden von Jahren" For thousands of years...
"ist die Erde ein Schlachtfeld" The Earth has been a battlefield...
"Kriege werden gefochten"  Wars have been fought...
"von m?chtigen L?ndern" By powerful countries...
"die gef?hrt werden, von Gener?len" Which were fought by generals...
"Feldherren und grossen Kriegern" Commanders and big wars...
"Helden werden geboren" Heroes were born...
"Kompanien werden zerschlagen" Armies were defeated...
"Landstriche werden verw?stet" Lands were destroyed..
"aber das hat mit dem folgenden Film rein gar nichts zu tun" But that has nothing to do with the following movie.

THE SECOND PART: INTRO
"Battlefield: Desert Combat ist eines der meistgespielten Onlinegames auf der Welt." Battlefield: Desert Combat is the most played game in the world...
"Noch in der Testphase, spielen Tausende von begeisterten Community mitgliedern DC" Even in beta, thousands of people played the game...
"Und genau da liegt das Problem" And that's the problem...
"Die Community" The community.

THE SECOND PART: TITLE CARDS (sans the obvious ones)
"Der fusskranke Pilot" The footsore pilot
"Der Planecamper, der anderen nicht den Vorteil des Fliegens g?nnt" The jealous planecamper
"Der Planecamper - kombiniert mit dem Teamkiller" The Teamkilling Planecamper
"Der Planecamper, der endlich ein Flugzeug bekommt, aber nicht fliegen kann" The Planecamper who finally gets a plane but can't fly
"Der Wald" The forest

THE CREDITS
"der ernste Teil" The serious part
"der ernste Teil des Movies gibt das Spiel so wieder, wie es mit den richtigen Leuten gespielt werden kann. Schnelle, gute Action" The serious part of the movie shows how much fun the game is when it's being played with the right guys. Fast, good action.
"der realistische Teil" The realistic part
"der realistische Tiel des Movies gibt das Spiel so wieder, wie es auf den meisten Public Servern gespielt wird. Der beste Beweis, dass DESERT COMBAT das n?chste CS werden kann. Wenn es von den falschen Leuten gespielt wird." The realistic part of the movie shows that the game depends on the people playing. If they're stupid noobs, it's not fun, just like Counterstrike, but on the other hand, if a lot of cool and fun people play, it's a lot of fun, just like Counterstrike.
"Jetzt noch fix ein paar Gr?sse" Now, some shout outs
"alle, die ich vergressen hab, lieb ich trotzdem aus ganzem Herzen und w?nsche alles gute f?r den Rest ihres Lebens, auf dass sie viele s?sse Kinder in die Welt setzen, die weiterhin alle guten Teamspiele verhunzen." I wish you all good luck in this world and hope that you bring many children into the world to make the next generation of good players.
"Vielen Dank" Many thanks

Not very many good flight sims out there for mac. My fav is Falcon 4.0. However it has no GR support. It can still be done.

*cough* BULLSHIT *cough*

I think it's reasonable to require a DVD drive. I can't think of a Mac that would fit those minimum requirements and not have come with a DVD drive. Now we won't have to deal with anymore of the two disc crap. Additionally, this may help Aspyr cut down on piracy. If they require that the DVD be in the drive to play (not just a mounted disk image), it will make it tougher for people to warez the game as they will need a Superdrive to burn a copy.

remember the first versions of the eMac? the ones with 700Mhz and only a normal CD drive... they have the minimum requirements, but no DVD drive.
if i?d only have waited a month for the combo drives... bah.

I think its a good thing... sorry to those without but if people don't keep pushing the demands of this stuff, and making use of the new technology that is available then things just wont prgress as fast as people would like... and it dosn't take a scientist or a comp geek to tell u the advantage of DVD over CD

Ace, one exception besides old eMacs would be new iBooks.

There's still an iBook you can get that doesn't have a DVD.

But, sucks to be them.  I agree with all the reasons for putting it on a DVD, and if push comes to shove, a firewire DVD drive is a good investment for those that don't have a DVD drive.

Lol, it seems like we always get the PC hits, luckily not most of the shits. We get them a bit later, but at least we know that when a game releases on Mac, that it was probably at one point a semi-decent to great PC game.

There are just two games, ultermatly one game i really want to get my hands on.... HalfLife2..

Of all the game engines ive seen being developed in the last few years, of all the freedom of gameplay, of all the efforts to allow user interaction with the environment.... Halflife two i think is going to simply blow everything out of the water. ID's Doom3 looks to be coming along nicely, but i don't see anything quite even coming close to HL2
