Norwegian men get drafted around the tender age of 19, so that would be 8 years ago....spent a year in Finmark at Garnisonen I Porsanger....after my period as a recruit I ended up behind a desk because of a skin decease...which made it impossible for me to be in the field....yup it is true...and not a lame excuse to get out of there. I volunteered for the test platoon of what would later become the "jaeger" batallion. I assume that you GS already know what Jaegers do. Long story short...I am now in the reserves...and get ready for this peeps....Yup the army has decided that if I have to go on drills, or in case of a war, I will be equiped with a 50 cal machinegun placed on top of a personell carrier, and I will be serving coffee to my platoon leader, being his assistant...hardly know what the 50 cal looks like :-X but thats the norwegian army for you ;)

Hey Macuser,

Nice timing with that quote.  I'm not sure how you're interpreting it, so I feel the need to respond.  In today's affairs the context applies to us much differently.  Take my icon for example, Martin Luther King died for liberty, without physically fighting for it.  For others to assume that it's necessary to physically attack in order to obtain liberty is falsely interpreting the quote.  

The context of that message coupled with physically going to battle currently applies less to our nation but in more ways to nations we are in conflict with, unfortunately.  Patrick Henry most likely would be giving a completely different message today.

I think, to be perfectly accurate Ssick, Patrick Henry would have been saying the same thing, but instead as an Iraqi, and he would have meant it as a call to arms against Saddam. We could apply it the world over, but one thing has obviously changed. Some people are not willing to fight for liberty at the price of death, because they have not tasted liberty enough to understand it. Patrick Henry had.

What does this mean? To Mr. Bush it means taking liberty to them. To his opponents, it means waiting for them to gain the clairvoyance enough to know why they should fight for liberty, such that they fight for themselves.

Neither viewpoint is right. I hope that is obvious. You can't hand liberty to someone when they don't know what to do with it. Nor can you expect them to want it or fight for it if they do not know what it is. It is time for the world to realise that not everyone is ready and able to govern himself, much less can the average American. The solution is what then? I don't think I will answer that just now, though part of me desires it.

To apply the quote to a civil rights struggle is interesting indeed... the quote clearly shows its age in this respect. Patrick Henry knew that the English Crown would never fight a war to exterminate all of the colonial rebels. Add to that, the anti-revolutionaries were not a majority. Today however, certain people groups would indeed exterminate others, and are quite the majority without an ocean in between them and their enemy. I think these changes entirely invalidate the quote, sad to say.

To answer what Patrick Henry would say today requires a different angle. One could start with "a house divided against itself cannot stand." That quote alone tears down Iraqi, Palestinian, and other modern "freedom fighters'" hopes for victory.

Anything that has anything at all to do with the military.  It doesn't have to be a direct quote from someone in the military (Like a Patton or MacArthur quote).  It just has to have something to do with the military (like my brother's quote from Ronald Reagan about defending freedom).

Some quotes ive found in researching WWI.  If you decide to not read them all, i strongly encourage you to read at least the last one.

My company had to take a trench. We had been told it was at seventymeters: it was more than two hundred. It was necessary to crawl and keep still: all the world was up and screaming. My half platoon held the left. I had six men around when I reached the German wire, between eight and nine o'clock in the evening.

I stepped over their bodies, the next morning, about four o'clock.

I found the first pantless, as if claws had scratched his trousers off. His buttocks exposed, cut back and forth as though by a butcher's knife. The second hung whole on a bush, his head balancing on the end of the highest branch, like the head of a dead sparrow. The others were rolled into a porridge of mud and blood. I didn't look at them. Now what in God's name makes you think I SUPPORT war?  Actually, support is probably not the word you meant to use.  I do support war when necessary.  I do not, however, enjoy war.  War is simply a necessary evil when diplomacy can not take care of things.  I am not FOR war.  War is a terrible thing that I know all to well from personal experiance.  Seeing my buddy laying in PIECES before my very eyes has changed my life forever.  I would never wish anyone into that situation.  But that being said, sometimes some things are worth fighting for, and some things are worth dying for.  My friend who is now dead knew that, and was proud to serve in our military, and knew the concequinces of his service.  War is the last thing anyone WANTS.  But sometimes it is the only thing that will keep us free.

GhostSniper you can't translate everything, you can do it word by word but that would take wouldn't come close to the real meaning. Further some of the used words don't appear in any dictionary ;-)

However the quote from Ltn. Eppacher: "War is the only solution"

Gasalarm = "gas alert". Every day we heard this so often... At all you have 15seconds to put on your gas mask after 2 weeks no one needed longer than 5 seconds to get it out of the bag and over your head.

The rest can't be translated that well.

Patton was a real character. He once was visiting the wounded at a hospital to keep morale and he went by everyone's bed asking them what their injuries were and about themselves. He got to one soldier who claimed to have shell shock. Patton called him a pussy and took out his gun and tried to shoot the man. He almost lost his job for that.

Heres a quote from the Roman General who defeated Hannibal. It's actually an amazing story, don't know how the bastard did it. Overlooked in most respects.
