Title: A new game for ya'll Post by: Mr. Lothario on October 07, 2003, 11:50:03 am Before anybody steals my thunder, here's a heads-up on a sweeeet (and free) little game called ArmageTron. It's Tron lightcycle racing in 3D and with network play. You can get it here (http://armagetron.sourceforge.net/download_macosx.html). It's open-source, is compiled for OS X, Windows, and Linux, and is only about 300K to download. Good stuff, go get it. It's damn fun on NetFone, too. But then, NetFone increases the fun of any game by 231% (scientifically determined).
Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Brain on October 08, 2003, 01:26:11 am loth, it's 230.613%
you got your significant figures messed up ;) Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Supernatural Pie on October 08, 2003, 01:34:27 am If I ever have to hear "significant figures" from my old chem teacher again, I'll go on a rampage.

Normally I wouldn't argue about significant figures, but since I get a perverse pleasure in proving anyone called Brain wrong (I will really take over the world Pinky"), I offer this. No matter how many sig-figs you have in your primay calculation, to calculate a percentage your final step is to divide by 100 (or 1). Since percentage is based upon the number one. So how many sig-figs in 100? The same amount as in the number 1. You could take it to three, since you could call it 100., and I'll give you that. So when you divide by 1.00x10?2, you can't have a percentage like 230.613%. Leave it to an ENGINEERING school to fark up SCIENTIFIC notation and sig-figs. =D Back on topic, don't play it at 5am, you wont get to sleep afterwards. Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Mr. Lothario on October 08, 2003, 03:35:59 am BTW, I discovered (by RTFMing) that it IS possible to restrict cameras. So next time we play, we can do first-person only, enforced by the server. Wootage.
Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Brain on October 08, 2003, 06:22:34 am nice try bucc, but multiplication by 100 in this case is multiplication by an exact quantity. thusly 100 is treated as having an infinite number of significant digits for the purpose of sig fig rules (in layman's terms for those who didn't want to try and understand what i just said, it's ignored)
and yes we know that 100 isn't 100.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000135 because we are taking this answer which is per single unit and changing it to per 100 units (these unit's also having a definite value of exactly 1) and if we go to dictionary. com, we see that the word percent comes from per cent., abbreviation of per centum, by the hundred which further shows that 100 is a definite value, because that is how it is defined (for the sole purposes of this calculation) this yet another one of those cases where sigfigs doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. like saying i have 3 computers weighing 2.125 lbs each. the correct answer for the weight is 6.375 lbs, not 6 lbs (again the question is how do you have a half of a computer?, you either have one or you dont.) Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Nail.Im.Ixam on October 08, 2003, 07:21:54 am For you fans of older mac games... give this a shot.
http://resurrection.bungie.org (http://resurrection.bungie.org) They've actually got the entire demo of Marathon playable in their UT conversion.. it's pretty nifty. Sure, it's graphics are nothing compared to RvS or UT2k3, but they're a helluva lot better than Marathon's were. Title: Re:A new game for ya'll Post by: Mr. Lothario on October 08, 2003, 11:26:58 am And don't forget Aleph One (http://source.bungie.org/). It's a full reworking of the Marathon engine (the Marathon Infinity source code was released to the public domain by Bungie a few years back). If you have data files for Marathon 2 or Infinity (if you own the game or download the old demo), you use those with the Aleph One engine and it looks all purdy and is hardware-accelerated and has mouselook and shite.
